Buying Used Home Appliances in Colombia: Voltage, Gas Hookups and Inspection Guide
A cheap used fridge or stove only helps if it matches your building's power and gas. Learn to read the nameplate, test before paying, and know your remedies.

Most unfurnished rentals in Colombia come with a kitchen counter and a gap where the fridge should be. A used refrigerator or washer from a leaving expat is the obvious fix, but it only saves money if the machine matches the building's power and gas. This guide is the technical companion to our general guide to buying used appliances in Colombia, which covers where to meet and how to pay. Here we only deal with voltage, fuel, inspection and who owes you a remedy.
Quick answer: read the metal rating plate, see the machine actually run before you pay, and confirm the fuel type (piped natural gas or cylinder) before accepting any stove or water heater.
What the outlet actually delivers
Colombia's standard frequency is 60 Hz. The everyday outlet is in the 120 V class. That is where the tidy "Colombia is 110 V, ovens are 220 V" line comes from, and I think it is too crude to rely on. The RETIE electrical regulation (updated by Resolución 40284 of 23 June 2026) lists low-voltage nominals of 120 V phase-to-ground, 208 V between phases on three-phase systems, 120/240 V on single-phase three-wire systems, and 120 V on two-wire systems. Equipment built for other voltages needs a purpose-made transformer, and that condition has to be marked on the equipment.
What you get depends on the utility and the building. Enel Colombia, which serves the Bogotá area, classes its low-voltage connections as 120/208 V and also lists 120 V, 120/240 V and 208/120 V services, with a stated tolerance of +5% / -10%. Grupo EPM, in the Medellín area, documents 120/240 V single-phase three-wire and 127/220 V three-phase four-wire systems. So "220" in Medellín can mean 127/220 V, and "220" in Bogotá may be 208 V. The nameplate and your apartment's real circuit decide, not the city nickname.
How to read the plate
- A plate that says 110-127 V and 60 Hz is the safe default for a normal outlet.
- A plate that says 220-240 V only is the wrong machine for a normal outlet. A European or Southern Cone washer, dryer or oven will not run correctly, and a traveler plug adapter does not change that.
- Do not trust a cheap step-up transformer for a washer, dryer or oven, and never cut off a ground pin to make a plug fit.
Outlets vary too. Many take two flat parallel blades, with or without a round ground pin, and older apartments still have two-pin outlets. New work is expected to be grounded, but do not assume yours is. If you are unsure, an electrician can check the circuit before the machine arrives.
Inspect it before any money moves
Ask for the rating plate photo first, then insist on a powered test in person. If the seller will not plug it in, walk away. That is my rule, and I do not bend it for a good price.
- Refrigerator: check it stands level, the door gasket seals, the compressor starts and the interior begins to cool, and there is no pooled water underneath.
- Washer: run it through fill, agitate or tumble, spin and drain. Smell for burning and make sure the hoses come with it.
- Electric stove: every element should heat.
- Gas stove: test only once the gas family matches your apartment (next section). Every burner should light and burn with a steady blue flame. A yellow, lifting or sooty flame is a reason to leave.
- Everywhere: look for a taped or frayed cord and a ground pin that is still there if the plug has one.
One honest downside: a powered test only tells you the machine works today. A compressor that dies in six weeks will not warn you, which is why the warranty section below matters.

Natural gas versus pipeta
Piped natural gas and cylinder LPG (GLP, locally a pipeta or cilindro) are different gas families. A stove or water heater built for one is not safe on the other, and a mismatch causes leaks and poor combustion. Resolución 90902 of 2013, as amended, requires the supplied gas to match a gas family used in Colombia and ties installation practice to NTC 2505. It remains in force: Resolución 40348 of 29 July 2026 extended it for 12 months.
So ask the landlord or building first which fuel the apartment uses. Never connect a cylinder stove to a wall gas outlet, or the reverse. Conversion is a manufacturer's kit fitted by a competent installer, not a buyer swapping parts in the kitchen. I will not give a DIY method here, because there is no safe one for a beginner.
If you smell gas, do not light anything and do not test for leaks with a flame. Stop, ventilate the room and contact your gas distributor's emergency channel.
Piped-gas users also owe a periodic internal-installation review. The certificate must be obtained between five months before, and the last business day of, the month in which five years are completed since the last review or the connection. The user pays, and an ONAC-accredited inspection body or the distributor performs it. Without a valid certificate the distributor can suspend service, and a modified installation has to be reported and recertified rather than waiting for the five-year date. How the visit works is in our apartment gas inspection guide. Whether an owner reimburses you is a lease question.
Who owes you a remedy if it fails
The answer depends on who sold it.
Professional seller (shop or dealer). Under Ley 1480 de 2011, article 8, a used appliance whose original legal warranty has expired carries a three-month legal warranty unless you were told and accepted, in writing, that it is sold with no warranty. A wall sign saying "no changes" is not that writing. Article 15 also requires public offers of used or repaired goods to say so clearly. The claim path is in our used purchase warranty and returns guide.
Private seller. A person-to-person sale is not covered by the three-month consumer warranty. The Civil Code (arts. 1914-1926) instead lets you seek rescission or a price reduction for hidden defects that already existed, were not disclosed, and make the item unfit or only imperfectly fit. For movable goods that action lasts six months from real delivery (art. 1923). A private seller who knew about the defect and hid it stays liable even if the contract tried to waive coverage (art. 1916). Keep your chat history and photos.
A missing energy label on a private used listing is not proof the sale is illegal, and a label does not prove the machine suits your voltage or gas.
Handoff and the final checklist
Heavy appliances are usually handed over in the building or moved by a small-truck service you hire. Agree who pays that trip before you pay for the machine. If you need a mover, see our guide to hiring a small truck for a move. If you are the one selling, listings for the same category go in the same appliances section.
- Plate: does it match your outlet's voltage and 60 Hz?
- Powered test: did you see the real function run?
- Gas family: does the stove match your piped gas or your pipeta?
Preguntas frecuentes
❓ Is Colombia 110 V or 220 V?
Ordinary outlets are in the 120 V class at 60 Hz, and some buildings also have 208 V or 240 V between energized conductors. Enel and Grupo EPM list different services, so read the nameplate and check your actual circuit. (verifica en la fuente oficial)
❓ Will a European 220-240 V washer work in a Colombian apartment?
Not on a normal 120 V outlet, and a plug adapter does not fix that. Do not cut a ground pin or rely on a cheap transformer for a high-power machine. Ask an electrician before buying. (verifica en la fuente oficial)
❓ Can I use a pipeta stove on the building's natural-gas pipe?
No. Natural gas and LPG are different gas families, and a stove built for one is unsafe on the other. Conversion needs the manufacturer's kit and a competent installer. See our gas inspection guide for the periodic visit. (verifica en la fuente oficial)
❓ Does a used fridge from a shop have a warranty?
From a professional seller, yes: three months unless you accepted in writing that it has no warranty. Article 15 of Ley 1480 also requires the offer to say the item is used or repaired. (verifica en la fuente oficial)
❓ What if I buy from a person who is leaving the country and the compressor dies?
The three-month consumer warranty does not automatically apply to a private sale. If the fault already existed, was serious and was not disclosed, the Civil Code hidden-defect action can last six months from delivery. (verifica en la fuente oficial)
❓ Who pays the five-year gas inspection?
The gas user pays the review by an accredited body or the distributor. Whether a tenant can recover it from the owner depends on the lease, and this guide does not set an amount. (verifica en la fuente oficial)
❓ What should I test before I pay?
Check the rating plate, run the real function of the machine, and for gas confirm the fuel matches your apartment. If the seller will not plug it in or light the burners safely, walk away. (verifica en la fuente oficial)
