Craigslist Alternatives in Colombia: Where Expats Buy, Sell, and Rent Safely

Colombia's Craigslist area is live but low-trust. Here is which platform fits used goods, phones, and rentals, plus the checks to run before you pay.

If you are used to Craigslist, you probably typed "craigslist Medellín" or "craigslist Bogotá" into a search bar the week you landed, hoping to find a cheap sofa or a room. Here is what happens next, and what to use instead. (The product story behind our own marketplace is in an earlier post; this one is about safety and choosing the right tool.)

Short answer: Craigslist is still online for Colombia, but it is a poor default. Pick the platform by the job (furniture, phone, room, shipped goods) and run the checks below before any money moves.

What you actually get at colombia.craigslist.org

There is one Colombia area at colombia.craigslist.org, with Spanish category labels for jobs, apartments, for-sale, services and community. There is no separate Medellín or Bogotá site; those searches land on the same national page.

When I looked on 22 October 2026, the national for-sale feed mixed Colombian posts with listings placed outside Colombia. That is the real problem: it is not a clean local board, so you waste time filtering. I would not treat any single listing there as recommended or still available.

On cost, Craigslist's own fee page says postings are free except for the US and Canadian categories it lists, and Colombia is not on that paid list (craigslist.org, accessed October 2026).

Match the job to the platform

Used furniture and household goods

These are local-pickup deals, so the rule is simple: see the item, then pay. Facebook Marketplace is where most of the volume sits, but its Purchase Protection only covers eligible checkout or shipping orders. Local pickup, Messenger and other off-platform payments are not covered (Facebook Help, accessed October 2026). Honest downside: you are on your own if the sofa is not what the photos showed.

Phones

Before paying for a used handset, dial *#06# to read the IMEI, then check it on imeicolombia.com.co, the public negative-database check run by the mobile operators. A clear result only means that IMEI was not blocked at that moment. It is not proof of ownership or a fair price. If the phone is foreign or unregistered, see our CRC homologation guide.

Shipped goods nationwide

Mercado Libre is the structured option. It does not publish one seller percentage: the charge depends on category, condition, price, listing type and shipping. If you are selling, run the official cost simulator before you trust a net price. For a wider look at free versus paid boards, read our classifieds comparison.

OLX

El Tiempo reported on 18 July 2023 that OLX Colombia told users it would stop taking new ads and be unavailable as of 14 July 2023. I did not re-test the domain, so treat any page still using the OLX name as unverified until you confirm it.

Safety checks that do not depend on the app

The Policía Nacional's Centro Cibernético Policial warned on 3 October 2026 that online buy/sell fraud and fake offers of fincas, apartments and rooms were active. Its red flags:

  • A price far below market.
  • A demand for full payment in advance.
  • A payment account that does not match the business or person.
  • A new or thin account.
  • Pressure to leave the platform.
  • External links to "confirm" a payment.

In that same recess-period note, police reported 3,946 internet buy/sell fraud incidents and 539 phishing site-impersonation cases. Read those as that note's figures, not an annual national total.

My rules: meet in a busy public place you choose, never send the full price or a full rental deposit before seeing the item or place, and never open a fresh chat or link to "confirm" a payment. If money is already gone, report it to CAI Virtual at caivirtual.policia.gov.co or by WhatsApp at 323-2733411.

Renting a room or apartment

See the place, meet whoever has the keys, and get the terms in writing before a deposit moves. For short stays, our guide to avoiding finca rental scams covers deposit tricks, and for shared rooms in Bogotá there is a coliving guide.

What consumer law does and does not cover

Under Ley 1480 de 2011, article 5, a provider is someone who habitually offers or sells products. A neighbor selling one sofa is not automatically in a consumer-law relationship.

Article 8 says used products whose legal warranty has expired may be sold without warranty only if the seller clearly informs the buyer and the buyer accepts in writing; otherwise the statute sets three months. That applies to habitual providers, not every Facebook sale.

SIC Facilita is a free, voluntary channel for consumer-provider disputes. It does not hold money for a private handoff, and a formal SIC case starts with a direct claim to the provider. A lawyer is not required for claims that do not exceed 40 current monthly legal minimum wages. For merchant goods, see our SIC complaint guide. It is the wrong tool for a stranger who took your wire deposit.

Where Colombia Move fits

On its About page on 22 October 2026, Colombia Move showed 880 active listings across 79 cities, with housing the largest block at 357. Posting and contact carry no per-contact commission; revenue also comes from advertising, promoted placements and optional seller tools. It is one option for direct owner contact, not a guarantee. The same checks apply.

Do this today

  • Open the Craigslist area only with eyes open and expect mixed results.
  • Check any used phone with *#06# before paying.
  • Refuse full prepayment on items and rentals.
  • Keep every payment inside the deal you can see, never behind a "confirm" link.

Frequently Asked Questions

❓ Does Craigslist work in Colombia?

Yes, one national Colombia site is live. On 22 October 2026 its for-sale feed mixed Colombian posts with listings from outside Colombia, so it is a weak default rather than a clean local board. Expect to filter heavily and verify everything yourself (verify with the official source, as accessed).

❓ Is there a Craigslist just for Medellín or Bogotá?

No. Craigslist runs a single Colombia area with Spanish category labels, so searches for either city land on the same national page. Use location filters in the posts themselves and confirm where an item or apartment really is before you travel.

❓ Is OLX still the Craigslist substitute?

Not as far as reporting shows. El Tiempo reported in July 2023 that OLX Colombia said the site would be unavailable as of 14 July 2023. Treat any page still using the OLX name as unverified before you pay anyone (verify with the official source, as accessed).

❓ Does Facebook Marketplace refund a bad local pickup?

Generally no. Purchase Protection covers eligible checkout or shipping orders, not local pickup, Messenger or other off-platform payments. Inspect the item first and pay only once you have it in hand (verify with the official source, as accessed).

❓ How much does Mercado Libre charge the seller?

There is no single percentage. The charge depends on category, condition, price, listing type and shipping, so run Mercado Libre's official cost simulator for your exact item before relying on a net price (verify with the official source, as accessed).

❓ How do I check a used phone before I pay?

Dial *#06# to read the IMEI, then check it on imeicolombia.com.co. A clear result only shows the block status at that moment; it does not prove ownership or a fair price (verify with the official source, as accessed).

❓ Should I wire a deposit to hold an apartment from a classified?

Do not send full payment before you see the place. Full advance payment, a price far below market and pressure to leave the platform are red flags in police guidance dated 3 October 2026 (verify with the official source, as accessed).
