Medical Exam for a Colombian Driver's License: Inside the CRC (Centro de Reconocimiento)

What the CRC medical exam covers for a Colombian driver's license: how to pick a legal center, what is tested, and how the six-month certificate reaches RUNT.

First, a clarification that trips up a lot of newcomers: the CRC in this article is the Centro de Reconocimiento de Conductores, the clinic that certifies you are physically, mentally and motor-skills fit to drive. It is not the communications regulator that deals with mobile phones. If you are applying for your first Colombian license, renewing one, or adding a category, this clinic visit is the step that unlocks everything else.

Quick answer: you take a short battery of psychology, coordination, vision, hearing and general-medicine checks at a CRC registered in RUNT. The result is uploaded to RUNT, and the certificate is valid for a maximum of six months from the date of issue.

Who actually needs this exam

You need the certificate for a first Colombian license, a renewal, or a recategorization. The full sequence of getting a license from scratch lives in our complete license pathway guide; this post stays inside the clinic.

You do not need it yet if you are a tourist or person in transit driving on a current foreign license. According to Bogotá's mobility secretariat (page updated September 2026) and a MinTransporte concept from May 2025, that use may not exceed six months, and it only covers your authorized stay. There is no separate "90-day license." The foreign-license rules guide explains that window.

One more wrinkle: Bogotá's published recognition path for people born in Spain, Peru, Korea, Chile, Paraguay, Argentina and Portugal does not list a CRC certificate, while a first-time application does. Confirm locally with your transit office before you skip the exam, because I would not bet a morning on a web page.

Do not pick the clinic with the loudest sign. Filter for "Centros de Reconocimiento de Conductores" in the RUNT actor directory and match the name and address. Supertransporte said in August 2026 that more than 500 centers were registered, so you will have options.

Then check the center's ONAC accreditation scope. Group 1 covers A1, A2 and B1; Group 2 covers B2, B3, C1, C2 and C3. A separate scope exists for firearm permits, and that is not a driver's license exam.

  • Pay only through the center's own collection channels. These bodies may not take cash.
  • Prices differ by center, category and profile. Use the Supertransporte tariff search and keep the written receipt.
  • No one may take the test for you, and no intermediary may guarantee a result for a fee.

What happens inside, in order

Expect roughly an hour, though centers vary. The official order is below.

  1. ID and biometrics. You attend in person with a current ID in good condition. A cédula de extranjería, valid passport or PPT is accepted on Bogotá's operator page; confirm outside Bogotá.
  2. Psychology and coordination. Supertransporte describes five psychomotor tests plus a personality test. The evaluated capacities include acceleration-braking coordination and overall motor coordination, which is why you may sit at a pedal-and-button station.
  3. Vision. Visual acuity, campimetry (peripheral field), glare reaction and recovery, color discrimination, and horizontal and vertical phoria.
  4. Hearing. Assessed in both ears in a sound-damped booth. Hearing aids are part of how the test is done, and some losses can lead to a vehicle adaptation rather than a plain fail.
  5. General medicine. A structured medical-history interview with a doctor.
  6. Second fingerprint. After the exam you register your fingerprint again so the result can be authenticated and loaded to RUNT.

Wear the glasses or hearing aids you really drive with. I will not promise that lenses guarantee a pass or that a restriction will or will not be printed; that is the professional's call. If your last prescription is stale, a separate optical-shop eye exam is a different thing from the CRC vision station.

After the result: the six-month clock

Your certificate is valid for six months from issue, so book the transit appointment inside that window. It is valid before the nearest organismo de tránsito, and certificates from a CRC in a metropolitan area are valid at transit bodies of the municipalities in that area.

For a first Colombian license, Bogotá's transit office validates a certificate uploaded through SICOV by a CRC registered in RUNT. A routine EPS visit or a private doctor's note is not that certificate. A 2023 ministry concept described a limited public-hospital path for transit bodies in Amazonas, Guainía, San Andrés and Vichada, so treat that as a dated local exception, not a nationwide rule.

Other steps stay separate: SIMIT clearance, and the driving-school (CEA) course for a first-time license. The CALE theory-and-practical exam was postponed by MinTransporte's Circular 0317 of 28 August 2026, but that is a deferral, not an abolition and not a CEA waiver. Recheck before your appointment. If you are in Bogotá, window fees are covered in our ventanilla única fee guide.

One exam can cover a car and a motorcycle filed at the same time, according to a 2023 concept; separate filings on different dates may each need their own certificate. Ask your transit office.

A2 versus B1: which category are you testing for?

MinTransporte's categories: A1 is motorcycles under 125 cc, A2 is motorcycles over 125 cc, and B1 covers private cars, motocarros, cuatrimotos, camperos, camionetas and microbuses. The public-service C categories fall under the heavier Group 2 scope, so verify your chosen center covers them. If A2 is your goal, gear rules come after the medical step; see our helmet and riding gear guide.

According to active listings on Colombia Move (October 2026), the motorcycle category has 10 active ads and 8 recent ones, and cars have 8 active ads. Treat that as a thin browse once your category is real, not as proof the clinic will pass you.

If you are booking around 2 November 2026

The All Saints bridge can change public-counter hours. I have not seen a closure notice, so I will not say centers are closed, but call or check both your CRC and your transit window before you travel.

If someone offers a guaranteed pass

Walk out. A guaranteed pass, a stand-in test taker, or a cash side payment is exactly what Supertransporte warned about in August 2026; impersonation and altering the real timing of the tests are illegal. Pay nothing on the side and report the center at supertransporte.gov.co, on the national line 018000915615, or by WhatsApp "Usuario Avisa" 3185946666.

Frequently Asked Questions

❓ Is an EPS or private-doctor certificate enough for a Colombian license?

No. The transit office looks for a CRC certificate uploaded to RUNT through SICOV, and an EPS consultation or private doctor's note is a different document. A narrow public-hospital exception described in a 2023 concept applies only to a few named departments (verify with the official source, as accessed).

❓ How long does the CRC certificate last?

It is valid for a maximum of six months from the date of issue. Book your organismo de tránsito appointment inside that window, or you will have to repeat the exam. Confirm any local scheduling delays with your transit office (verify with the official source, as accessed).

❓ What are the stations in the exam?

You go through psychology and coordination tests, vision, hearing and general medicine, then a second fingerprint so the result is loaded to RUNT. Exact room order and equipment vary by center, so ask yours when booking (verify with the official source, as accessed).

❓ Can I pay cash or send someone to take the test for me?

No. You must attend in person with a current ID, and CRCs may not receive cash. A fixer who guarantees a pass is a reason to leave and report the center to Supertransporte (verify with the official source, as accessed).

❓ Is this the same CRC that registers foreign phones?

No. This CRC is the Centro de Reconocimiento de Conductores, which certifies driving fitness. It has nothing to do with the communications regulator that homologates mobile phones, so do not mix up the two when searching online.

❓ Do tourists need this exam to drive?

Not while a current foreign license still covers an authorized stay, up to the six-month ceiling cited by Bogotá's mobility secretariat. You need the exam when you apply for a Colombian license, and losing tourist or in-transit status means you must hold one (verify with the official source, as accessed).

Filter Centros de Reconocimiento de Conductores in the RUNT actor directory and match name and address. Then look up that center's price in the Supertransporte tariff search; there is no single national fee to quote, so keep the receipt (verify with the official source, as accessed).
