Eye Exams and Buying Prescription Glasses in Colombia: What Optical Chains Charge, How Long Lenses Take, and What the EPS Benefits Plan Covers
A practical guide to booking an optometry exam at a Colombian chain, reading a glasses quote, and checking what the EPS benefits plan covers for lenses.

Short version: book an optometry visit at a chain, ask whether today's consult is free, and get a written quote that splits the exam, the frame, the lenses and any certificate. That one habit prevents most surprises at the register.
This is a retail errand, not a medical trip like the ones in our medical tourism guide. Below is what the two big chains publish, what the state benefits plan covers, and where I would be careful. Every price here is a chain's published figure as read on 24 October 2026, and chains can change them without notice.
Who actually examines your eyes
In Colombia, optometry requires a university title and a professional card under Ley 372 de 1997. An optometrist can run a full exam, refract, and prescribe glasses or contact lenses. Conventional surgery, laser and other invasive procedures are outside that scope and belong to ophthalmology.
So a chain visit ends in one of two ways: a prescription, or a referral if something looks wrong. It is not an emergency eye service. If you have sudden vision loss or pain, go to an urgent-care clinic instead. For a sibling cost guide on the specialist side of healthcare, see our dental care guide; the prices there do not apply to glasses.
What Lafam charges (as of 24 October 2026)
Lafam's written policy says the optometry consult is free in its stores nationwide. The same terms say it can change the price or limit which stores honor the free consult. The company also lists the exam as about 15 to 20 minutes, covering acuity, eye movements, anterior segment, ophthalmoscopy, keratometry and refraction.
- Standard consult and prescription: free under the current policy.
- Barranquilla exception: COP 30,000, or COP 10,000 with a same-day purchase (liquids and accessories excluded).
- Specific certificate (driver's-license form, firearms permit, school form): COP 45,000.
- Ophthalmology consult: COP 160,000, Lafam's own price, not a national tariff.
A Lafam certificate is not the CRC medical exam you need for a Colombian driver's license. Do not assume one replaces the other.
GMO: a separate retailer
GMO is Luxottica of Colombia S.A.S. and sells brands such as Ray-Ban, Oakley and Persol. It publishes the same corporate office and phone line as Lafam, but it has a different tax ID, so treat them as two retailers. The corporate floor on Calle 127A #53A-45 in Bogotá is an office, not a place for a walk-in exam.
Store pins I can verify, each separate:
- GMO El Tesoro: Carrera 25 A No. 1 A Sur 45, Centro Comercial El Tesoro, Local 1178, Medellín, weekdays 10:00 to 20:00.
- GMO Centro Mayor: Calle 38A Sur No. 34D-50, Centro Comercial Centro Mayor, Local 1079, Bogotá, weekdays 10:00 to 20:00.
- GMO Centro Mayor 2: a different local at the same mall address, Local 2092, Bogotá.
GMO's public appointment-terms page still prints a COP 45,000 visual-consult fee, but it opens with a 2025 campaign header. I would not trust that as today's price. Confirm the fee in the booking flow or at the counter. Its online catalog shows many frames labeled for store pickup in 48 hours and sale prices in the low COP 100,000s, but that is a catalog snapshot for frames, not the price of a finished pair with progressive or coated lenses.

Before you go, and how long it takes
Bring your current glasses or last prescription, arrive about five minutes early, and take contact lenses out 24 hours before. Lafam says glasses and contact-lens prescriptions are different; its contact-lens fitting is listed as free.
Lafam says formulated lenses mounted in a frame take 10 to 13 business days. Coatings and progressives are extra, and I would expect them to add time, so ask for a date in writing. The 48-hour GMO label is a catalog note for specific frames, not a promise for every job.
The honest downside: the exam is free but the quote is where costs hide. A cheap frame plus coatings and thicker lenses can climb quickly, so insist on separate lines for frame and lenses.
What the EPS plan covers
Resolución 2765 de 2025, Artículo 54, sets the rule for 2026. It finances external corrective lenses (glass or plastic, including polycarbonate) by medical or optometric prescription when a defect reduces visual acuity.
- Contributory regime: once a year through age 12, then once every five years. You pay the frame.
- Subsidized regime: under 21 and over 60, once a year, with the frame financed up to 10% of the legal monthly minimum wage. Ages over 21 and under 60: lenses once every five years, frame at your cost.
- Not financed: filters, colors, special films, contact lenses and solutions.
This is not a walk-in-with-your-cédula benefit at a mall chain. If you are affiliated, the order has to go through your EPS or IPS pathway; our EPS and private insurance guide covers the basics. Visitors without affiliation should budget the chain's retail price.
Warranties and returns
Lafam lists a two-year manufacturing-defect warranty on Luxottica frames and one year on lenses and treatments. Deep scratches and mishandling void it. That is a defect warranty, not a change-of-mind return.
For online purchases, Ley 1480 de 2011 gives a five-business-day retracto in distance sales, but it does not apply to goods made to your specifications. Custom prescription lenses can fall in that exception, so read the seller's terms before paying. If the store will not resolve a problem after you use its own PQRS line, see our SIC complaint guide.
Frequently Asked Questions
❓ Is the eye exam free in Colombia?
At Lafam it is free under the current company policy, except in Barranquilla, where the appointment page lists COP 30,000, or COP 10,000 with a qualifying same-day purchase. GMO's public fee page is stale, so confirm in store (verify with the official source, as accessed).
❓ What do I pay if I only need a certificate?
Lafam lists COP 45,000 for a specific certificate, such as a school form or driver's-license form, while the ordinary prescription is currently free. That certificate is not the CRC medical exam required for a Colombian license (verify with the official source, as accessed).
❓ Does EPS pay for glasses?
Artículo 54 of Resolución 2765 de 2025 finances basic external lenses on an age and regime schedule; most contributory adults get them once every five years. You pay the frame, except the subsidized 10% legal-minimum cap for under-21s and over-60s. Coatings and contact lenses are not financed (verify with the official source, as accessed).
❓ How long until the glasses are ready?
Lafam says 10 to 13 business days for formulated lenses with a frame. Some GMO catalog frames are marked for 48-hour store pickup, but progressives or special treatments can take longer, so ask for a written date (verify with the official source, as accessed).
❓ Can I use the same prescription for contact lenses?
No. Lafam says contact-lens numbers are calculated separately from the glasses prescription. Its contact-lens fitting is listed as free, and you should remove contacts 24 hours before the exam (verify with the official source, as accessed).
❓ Can a tourist book a chain exam without EPS?
Yes, the chain exam is a retail appointment, and anyone outside the contributory or subsidized regimes should expect to pay the store's price. The EPS lens benefit is not something a visitor can claim at the mall counter (verify with the official source, as accessed).
❓ What if the glasses are wrong or I bought them online?
A manufacturing defect follows the seller's warranty, which Lafam lists as two years for Luxottica frames and one year for lenses and treatments. Custom prescription lenses may not qualify for the five-day distance-sale retracto, so ask before paying (verify with the official source, as accessed).
