Dollarcity in Colombia: What Expats Can (and Shouldn't) Buy for Apartment Setups
Dollarcity is great for small apartment basics and a poor place for mains-powered gadgets, long-life cookware or a grocery run. Here is what to grab, what to skip, and how the warranty really works.

IDIOMA DEL ARTÍCULO

You have the keys, the bed is on its way, and you are standing in an empty kitchen with no hangers, no trash can and not one glass. That is the moment Dollarcity earns its place. It is a variety store, though, not a supermarket, so for food head to the Bogotá supermarket and grocery guide instead.
According to Dollarama's financial report dated September 16, 2026, Dollarcity had 432 locations in Colombia as of June 30, 2026, and Colombia has been one of its countries since 2016. Dollarama International holds 60.1% of the regional parent, CARS, as a joint arrangement, so do not read it as a wholly foreign-owned chain. The parent describes the merchandise as sold at select fixed price points up to US$4.00 or the equivalent in local currency. That is not a one-dollar store, and I am deliberately not quoting peso prices: they change, and you should judge them on the shelf.
How a visit actually works
Dollarcity's own questions page says it does not publish a catalog or shelf prices, stock depends on each store, and it does not sell online or deliver. So you cannot price-check from your couch, and nobody can legitimately send you "Dollarcity" goods for a bank transfer. Pay at the register and keep the ticket.
Use the official locator at dollarcity.com/ubicaciones to find a branch near your apartment. Three examples, with hours as posted on October 24, 2026 (check your own branch, because they vary):
- Dollarcity Connecta, AC. 26 #92-32, Connecta Ecosistema de Negocios, edificio Gold 6 y 7, locales 1-4, Bogotá: 08:00AM–08:00PM daily.
- Dollarcity El Tesoro Medellín, Carrera 25A #1A Sur-45, Parque Comercial El Tesoro, P.H. local 8670, Medellín: 09:00AM–09:00PM daily.
- Dollarcity Unicentro de Occidente, carrera 111C #86-05, CC Unicentro de Occidente, local 1-10, Bogotá: 09:00AM–09:00PM daily.
The pages list the phone +57 601 387 6000. The locator also covers other cities, so check it rather than assuming.
Worth carrying home for a rental
The public departments include home, kitchen, cleaning, personal care, office, pets, celebrations and garden. Stay in the aisles where you can see and handle what you are buying:
- Hangers, hooks and bins. Plastic organizers, over-door hooks and laundry baskets are the classic win. Squeeze them and check that the lids close.
- Cleaning tools. Mops, brushes, sponges, buckets and a dustpan. You will need all of them the first week.
- Basic glassware and kitchen odds and ends. Plain drinking glasses, a spatula, a colander. Hold the glass up and look for chips.
- Office and desk bits. Folders, tape, pens and a notepad for the lease paperwork.
- Seasonal and decor items. Cheap frames and baskets make a rented room feel less empty.
- Simple pet accessories. A bowl or a leash is fine. For food and vet supplies, use the pet supplies guide.
My rule: buy things that cost little to be wrong about. If a hanger snaps, you shrug. If a pan warps, you resent it for a year.

Leave it on the shelf
Honest downside first: quality is uneven, and Colombian media regularly run complaints about items that fail on first use. Treat that as a reason to inspect, not as proof that any product is banned or unsafe.
Anything that plugs in
Colombia's RETIE rule (Resolución 40284 of June 23, 2026, Libro 3) sets general-use low-voltage supply at 120 V phase-to-ground at a standard 60 Hz. Other combinations exist, such as 208 V between phases on three-phase systems and 240 V across live conductors on single-phase three-wire systems. So "Colombia is 110 V" is a travel-blog shortcut, not the standard. Read the label on the box: if it is not rated for your apartment's supply, do not buy it. A plug adapter changes the shape of the prongs, not the voltage. If you need a real appliance, see the voltage and appliance guide.
Things you expect to last years
Thin frying pans and knives are where cheap goes expensive. Buy these elsewhere. The same goes for anything sealed that you cannot open and inspect.
Furniture and big storage
Shelving, wardrobes and sofas belong in the IKEA and furniture delivery guide, not a variety-store aisle.
A full pantry shop
Dollarcity is not a replacement for a real grocery run, so do not build your food budget around it.
Receipt, store window and legal warranty
Keep these two clocks separate. First, the store's rule: the Dollarcity questions page describes a ticketed process, at the same branch where you bought, and prints 48 hours. The page is a multi-country selector, so confirm you are reading the Colombia tab. That 48-hour window is a store process, not Colombia's legal warranty.
Second, the law. Under Ley 1480 de 2011 (Art. 7), the legal warranty still covers discounted goods. If no warranty term is stated, new products carry one year from delivery, and perishables run until their expiry date (Art. 8). The five-business-day retracto (Art. 47) applies to financed, timeshare, non-traditional or distance sales. An ordinary in-store purchase is not one of them, and a no-reason exchange exists only if the store announces that policy.
If a store refuses a genuine defect claim, the SIC consumer complaint guide walks through the next step. Details and exact wording are on the SIC warranty page.
Before your first trip, check the official locator, go with a short list, and accept that stock is whatever is on the shelf that day.
Frequently Asked Questions
❓ Is Dollarcity a one-dollar store?
No. Dollarama describes the merchandise as sold at select fixed price points up to US$4.00 or the equivalent in local currency. Peso prices appear only on the shelf in the store, not online, so judge each item in person. (verify with the official source, as accessed)
❓ Can I order Dollarcity items for delivery to my apartment?
No. The Dollarcity FAQ says there is no online shop and no home delivery. Use the store locator to find a branch, and be wary of anyone offering Dollarcity goods by bank transfer outside a store. (verify with the official source, as accessed)
❓ What is worth buying for a new rental?
Small, inspectable basics: hangers, bins, cleaning tools, plain glassware, office odds and ends and simple pet accessories. Check each item in the aisle that day, since stock varies by store and nothing is listed online. (verify with the official source, as accessed)
❓ What should I skip?
Skip mains-powered gadgets whose label does not match your apartment's supply, cookware you need to last for years, sealed items you cannot inspect, and a full grocery shop. Treat this as practical caution, not a claim that products are banned. (verify with the official source, as accessed)
❓ Is apartment power 110 volts?
Not exactly. The RETIE general-use standard is 120 V phase-to-ground at 60 Hz, with other low-voltage combinations in the same rule. Read the product label and do not assume your building matches a travel-blog figure. A plug adapter does not change voltage. (verify with the official source, as accessed)
❓ What if an item breaks the next week?
Keep the ticket. The store FAQ describes a short same-branch process printing 48 hours, so confirm the Colombia tab. Separately, Ley 1480 gives new goods one year of legal warranty when no term is stated. The five-day retracto is not an ordinary in-store right. (verify with the official source, as accessed)
❓ How do I find a store near my apartment?
Use the official locator at dollarcity.com/ubicaciones. Hours differ by store, and the three examples in this article are snapshots from October 24, 2026, so confirm your branch before going. (verify with the official source, as accessed)
