Gluten-Free, Vegan, and Organic Grocery Shopping in Colombia: How to Read Labels and Where Specialty Staples Are
Learn what Colombian labels really guarantee about gluten, allergens and organic claims, and which specialty shops in Bogotá, Envigado and Medellín are worth a trip.

Quick answer: In Colombia, read the ingredient list for the specific grain names, treat "sin gluten" as a marketing claim rather than a numbered standard, and look for a certifier's name next to any "orgánico" claim. For specialty staples, a handful of dedicated shops beat a generic supermarket run.
The first time you hunt for a plain oat milk or a flour you can trust, the discount chains feel like a dead end. Ordinary chains do a different job, and I cover them in our general supermarket guide. This article is about something narrower: reading the package, understanding the words, and knowing where specialty staples actually are. It is shopping guidance, not medical advice.
How to read a Colombian package
Colombian rules are more useful than most newcomers expect. Under Resolución 5109 de 2005, packaged foods must declare allergens by specific name. On packaged food sold in Colombia, gluten cereals must be declared by specific name: trigo, centeno, avena, cebada, espelta or their hybrids, and products of these. The same rule names crustaceans, egg, fish, maní, soya, milk including lactosa, tree nuts, and sulfites at 10 mg/kg or more.
That means oats are not invisible on a complying label. If you see avena, it counts as a gluten cereal in Colombian allergen terms, even when the pack says it is gluten-free.
Here is the part that surprises people: I could not find a numbered Colombian limit for "sin gluten" or "libre de gluten." INVIMA checks those claims with laboratory analysis, but do not assume a figure borrowed from another country applies here. Read the ingredients every time, and read the "puede contener" or "trazas" line too.
Also keep front-of-pack warning seals in mind. Under Resolución 810 de 2021, packaged foods carry nutrition labeling and warning labels, and a gluten-free, vegan or organic claim does not mean a product is free of those seals. A vegan cookie can still be a cookie.
Label Spanish worth memorizing
- sin gluten, libre de gluten
- puede contener, trazas
- trigo, cebada, centeno, avena, espelta
- leche, lactosa, huevo, soya, maní, nueces
- orgánico, ecológico, biológico, granel
Organic seal versus "natural"
"Natural," "saludable" and "fitness" are vibes. "Ecológico," "biológico" and "orgánico" are regulated. A product sold with those words must have certification from a control body authorized by the Ministerio de Agricultura (Resolución 187 de 2006). The Sello de Alimento Ecológico is not the same thing as the words "natural," "saludable," or "fitness."
You may also see community or participatory agroecology stickers. Those belong to a separate assurance model and are not the ministry's ecological-food seal. They can still be perfectly honest farms; they just are not the same label.
Practical tip: look on the pack for the seal and the certifier's name. When I tried to check the ministry's organic-operator portal on 11 October 2026, it returned an error, so do not count on it as a lookup. For fresh produce, a different logic applies, and the organic farmers-market guide covers mercados campesinos.

Bogotá, Envigado and Medellín shops worth the trip
I am keeping this list short on purpose. These are the venues I could verify on 11 October 2026.
Bogotá
- Mercado Vital, Carrera 10 #97-13, Bogotá. A bulk and gluten-free pantry shop. Hours: Monday to Friday 9:00-18:00, Saturday 9:30-16:00, closed Sunday. It lists "avena sin gluten en hojuelas" among its bulk goods.
- BioPlaza Nogal, Calle 79B #7-90, Bogotá. BioPlaza's own shop.
- BioPlaza Chicó, Transversal 17 #98-1, Bogotá. Also BioPlaza's own shop.
BioPlaza's gluten-free online range includes coconut flour, almond flour, millet, quinoa pop, plantain flour and a sagú waffle mix. Its own page, checked on 11 October 2026, offered delivery anywhere in Colombia and free delivery on purchases above 90,000 COP. Treat that as the page's term on that date, not a general rule.
Envigado and Medellín
- El Mercadito Saludable, Transversal 31 Sur #32D-14, Envigado. A BioPlaza stockist, not a BioPlaza-owned shop. No hours were published on that page, so confirm it is open before you go.
- MerkaOrgánico, Centro Comercial El Tesoro, local 9100, Medellín. BioPlaza lists it as a stockist, but the page gave no street number, so check before you travel.
Honest downside: bulk shops are wonderful for whole ingredients, but bulk bins and in-store bakery cases carry a higher cross-contact risk for celiac shoppers than a sealed package with a full ingredient list. "Avena sin gluten" on a bulk listing is not a guarantee of a dedicated facility. If you are celiac, favor sealed packs, and ask your own doctor how careful you need to be.
What to skip
Do not build a route around Gastronomy Market or any "Ceres Market" health-food chain. I could not confirm that either is an open shop, and old stockist lists keep repeating their addresses. Likewise, I will not give you a list of Carulla, Éxito, Jumbo, D1 or Ara aisles. For ordinary supermarket trips, use the Carulla guide, the store finder, and the Medellín chain guide.
For imported pantry items such as nut butters or specialty sauces, the imported groceries guide is the better starting point. One more rule: buy sealed goods from the shop or its own website. Do not pay a stranger on social media for a "gluten-free box."
Planning around Monday 12 October 2026
Monday 12 October 2026 is the paid 12 October holiday itself, because that date is already a Monday and Ley 51 de 1983 does not move it. Mercado Vital's published hours close the shop on Sundays, and I found no holiday hours for Monday. If you need staples that weekend, buy sealed items on Saturday 10 October, and confirm any other health shop before you travel rather than assuming it follows supermarket holiday hours.
Frequently Asked Questions
❓ Is "sin gluten" on a Colombian label a celiac-safe certification?
No numbered Colombian ppm standard was found for that phrase. INVIMA tests such claims in the lab, but you should still read the ingredient list and any "puede contener" line, because the claim alone is not a personal safety guarantee (verify with the official source, as accessed).
❓ Do packaged foods have to name wheat, barley, rye, and oats?
Yes, those gluten cereals have to be declared by their specific name. Look for trigo, centeno, avena, cebada, espelta or hybrids and products of them. The same rule covers milk, egg, soya, maní, tree nuts, fish, crustaceans and sulfites at 10 mg/kg or more (verify with the official source, as accessed).
❓ Does "orgánico" on a sign mean the food is certified?
The words orgánico, ecológico and biológico require certification from a control body authorized by the Ministerio de Agricultura. "Natural" carries no such requirement, and a participatory agroecology sticker is a different assurance model, not the ministry's ecological-food seal (verify with the official source, as accessed).
❓ Where can I shop in Bogotá if a discount store has no vegan or gluten-free staples?
Start with Mercado Vital at Carrera 10 #97-13 and the two BioPlaza shops named in this guide. For mainstream supermarkets, use the Carulla guide linked above. Confirm hours before you go, since they change (verify with the official source, as accessed).
❓ Are oats labeled "avena sin gluten" safe?
Oats count as a gluten cereal on Colombian allergen labels, and a sin gluten line is not a dedicated-facility guarantee. Bulk oats add cross-contact risk, so celiac shoppers should favor sealed packs and ask their own doctor (verify with the official source, as accessed).
❓ Is buying granel a good idea for celiac disease?
Bulk bins are a higher cross-contact risk than a sealed package. Mercado Vital is still useful if you can tolerate that risk, or if you are buying naturally gluten-free whole ingredients that you will wash and cook yourself (verify with the official source, as accessed).
❓ Will specialty shops be open on Monday 12 October 2026?
Mercado Vital's published hours close the shop on Sundays, and Monday holiday hours were not published on the pages checked. Confirm before the trip, and do not assume a health shop follows supermarket holiday hours (verify with the official source, as accessed).
