Declaring Cash Over $10,000 USD at Colombia Customs: DIAN Formulario 530 Airport Rules

Carrying more than USD 10,000 in cash, pesos or checks through a Colombian airport or border? Here is when Formulario 530 is required, what to write on it, and what happens if you skip it.

Quick answer: if you carry more than USD 10,000 (or the equivalent) in cash, including Colombian pesos, or in monetary instruments, you must declare it on DIAN's Formulario 530. You write the whole amount, not just the excess. The form is free, and declared cash does not pay the 15% goods duty.

Most of the panic I see around this topic comes from mixing three different things: the cash declaration, the baggage duty printed on the same sheet, and wires. This guide keeps them apart. Rules are national: they apply at the first airport, seaport or land border you reach, and Bogotá's airport is not a separate regime.

The decision rule: above USD 10,000, not "at" it

The legal wording is "superior a": more than USD 10,000. The form itself says that an amount that does not exceed USD 10,000 does not need to be declared on it. Exactly USD 10,000 is not, by itself, over the line.

Two details trip people up:

  • It is a declaration, not a cap. Declaring does not mean you are limited to a maximum.
  • You declare everything. DIAN Concepto 016941 of 7 September 2026 says USD 10,000 is the trigger, not an exempt slice. Writing only the excess is an incomplete declaration.

I will not convert USD 10,000 into pesos for you. Currencies other than the dollar are tested at Banco de la República's published rates, so check the current rate yourself rather than using a rule of thumb. If you want to compare today's exchange rate for planning purposes, the live dollar tool is useful, but the legal test is the official one.

Who files: you, or your family unit

Each traveler is tested individually, with one big exception. Family members who travel together and have civil, blood or affinity ties are one family unit. Their cash is added together, and one member can file a single Form 530 for the group when the group total is over USD 10,000.

Friends, classmates and tour groups are not a family unit unless they meet that tie test. Here is my honest advice: if you are unsure whether your relationship counts, declare. Do not try to split the money to get under the line. The family rule is a trap that creates a duty to declare, not a trick for extra allowances, and nobody should treat it as an allowance of USD 10,000 per relative.

What counts as cash and instruments

  • Cash: banknotes and coins in any foreign currency, plus Colombian pesos. Pesos are not exempt because they are "not foreign."
  • Monetary instruments: checks, payment orders and other documents that work like cash for paying obligations.
  • Third parties: the form asks whether you are acting for someone else, with their name and ID.

Add up your cash and your instruments for that trip. Declare if the cash, the instruments, or the combined total is over USD 10,000. List each class and currency in the table on the form.

Bank wires and courier shipments are not Form 530. DIAN routes non-traveler cash movements to Forms 532 and 534 and authorized channels. If you do not need to physically carry the money, a wire is usually the calmer choice, and cards cover a lot of daily spending; see paying with foreign credit cards in Colombia.

When and where to file

Arriving: the form must already be completed when your plane, ship or vehicle reaches the first Colombian airport, port or border crossing. International airlines must hand you the form. On land or sea, ask at the customs post or port. Everyone passes the customs control point before the baggage belts, and if you must declare, you hand the completed form to the officer.

Leaving: the form must be fully completed after you finish immigration formalities, even if the trip then does not happen.

The official form is free and exists in Spanish and English. If you want a copy, fill out two originals. I would fill it in on the plane, with a pen that works, and keep the stamped copy with your passport. Arrival has other airport steps too, such as the yellow fever certificate, which is a separate process from the cash declaration.

One small downside: it is a paper form, there is no advance online filing for travelers, and you will be filling it out in a queue-adjacent rush. Prepare the numbers beforehand.

The goods duty on the same form (not a cash tax)

Form 530 is also the baggage declaration, and its 15% box belongs to goods only. Cash does not enter these quotas and does not pay the 15% duty.

  • USD 2,000: accompanied baggage other than personal effects enters without the single duty.
  • Extra USD 3,000: after at least 5 calendar days abroad, with payment of the 15% single duty, once per person per year, while keeping the USD 2,000 franchise. DIAN describes the combined goods ceiling as USD 5,000.
  • Minors: 50% of the adult goods quota. That is a goods rule, not a cash limit.
  • Duty-free purchases count toward the goods quota, and omitted dutiable baggage can be seized.
  • The duty is paid at DIAN-authorized banks in the arrival port or airport.

Up to three mobile phones carried as personal effects are listed on the form with IMEI and a dollar value; see CRC phone homologation. Customs forms are also not your annual income-tax return; for that, see the Colombia tax calendar for foreign residents.

If you do not file, or file it wrong

The form carries two warnings. One says that if you do not declare, the amount above USD 10,000 will be retained. The broader one says that if you omit a required declaration, or file false, incomplete or wrong data, you may be sanctioned and the cash or instruments will be retained. Do not assume only the excess is held, and do not assume that a correct filing guarantees an instant, question-free exit.

On top of retention, the exchange statute (Decreto Ley 2245 de 2011, article 3, numeral 28) sets a fine of 30% of the undeclared value on entry and 40% on exit. Per DIAN Concepto 016941 of 7 September 2026, the base is the full amount that had to be declared, with nothing subtracted for the USD 10,000 trigger. That same concept rejects an older internal note that used only the excess. I will not give you a sample calculation, because DIAN has not published one.

What Form 530 is not

  • Not a wire or courier route. Those use Forms 532 and 534 and authorized channels.
  • Not foreign-investment registration. If the money is heading toward a property or business, registration is a separate Banco de la República process; read how Formulario 4 works. Declaring cash at the airport does not promise it will be accepted as a purchase payment.
  • Not a document checklist. The form asks for the data on it; no source-of-funds attachment is listed as a filing condition. Honest, complete data is what protects you.

Safety note: a big amount of cash is a theft risk in airports and cities alike. Use the official channel and do not show the amount to bystanders.

Final checklist

  1. Add the cash of everyone in your family unit.
  2. Add checks and similar instruments separately, then check the combined total.
  3. Do not invent your own peso threshold.
  4. Complete the form before you see the officer.
  5. Declare the full amount.
  6. Keep your stamped copy.

Always confirm current details on the official DIAN Form 530 page.

Frequently Asked Questions

❓ Do I declare at exactly USD 10,000, or only above it?

You declare only when the total is above USD 10,000 or its equivalent in other currencies. When you do declare, the form must show the whole amount you carry, not just the part over the line (verify with the official source, as accessed).

❓ Does my spouse's or child's cash count with mine?

Yes, if you travel together and form a family unit under DIAN's civil, blood or affinity definition. The group total is tested, and one form can cover everyone. Splitting cash among relatives does not create extra allowances, so if unsure, declare (verify with the official source, as accessed).

❓ Do pesos, checks and wires all count?

Colombian pesos in cash and checks or similar payment instruments count toward the declaration tests. A bank wire is not carried cash and is not Form 530; non-traveler movements use other DIAN forms and authorized channels (verify with the official source, as accessed).

❓ Does the 15% traveler tax apply to the cash?

No. The 15% single duty applies only to non-exempt goods. Baggage gets a USD 2,000 franchise, plus a further USD 3,000 band after 5 days abroad, with the duty, once per person per year. Cash sits outside those quotas (verify with the official source, as accessed).

❓ What happens if I do not declare?

The form warns of retention and sanctions. The exchange statute sets a 30% fine on entry and 40% on exit, and DIAN's 7 September 2026 concept says the base is the full amount that should have been declared, not only the excess (verify with the official source, as accessed).

❓ When do I fill out the form, and where do I get it?

Complete it before you reach the officer: on arrival at the first Colombian entry point, or after immigration when leaving. Airlines supply it, or the customs post on land and sea. It is free, in Spanish or English (verify with the official source, as accessed).

❓ Can I bring cash for a property purchase and skip other paperwork?

No. Form 530 only declares the cash or instruments you physically carry. Wires are a different regime, and foreign-investment registration is a separate Banco de la República form. Declaring does not guarantee the cash will be accepted as a property payment (verify with the official source, as accessed).
