How to Check Whether a Spanish School in Colombia Can Support a Student Visa

A school calling itself accredited is not the same as being authorized. Here is how to check SIET and SNIES, and what the admission letter must say, before you pay tuition.

Short answer: an admission letter only helps your visa file if the institution behind it can show the authorization that matches the kind of study. The word "accredited" on a school's website is marketing, not that authorization. This guide covers the school side only. For the filing steps, use our Visa V Estudiante guide.

Rules below were checked on 4 November 2026 against Cancillería's student-visa page and Resolución 5477 de 2022 (Diario Oficial 52.103, 22 July 2022). Fees change, so I print none; read Cancillería's own cost page before you pay.

What "accredited" has to mean

Three different things get mixed up under that word:

  • Licencia de funcionamiento plus registered program: what a private language academy needs. The certified education secretariat of the place where classes are taught issues the license, and the Ministry of Education says it is indefinite and conditional (Ministerio de Educación, ETDH FAQ; Decreto 1075 de 2015).
  • Registro calificado in SNIES: what a higher-education program needs to be legally offered.
  • A badge or private certificate: a school's own seal, a quality-certification flag or a foreign institute's label. It is not the license and not a SNIES record.

The student visa covers in-person, virtual or distance study in several levels, including educación para el trabajo y el desarrollo humano and higher education (Art. 36). A Spanish course usually falls under the first of those, so the license is what you want to see.

Private academies: check SIET yourself

SIET is the Ministry's public registry of ETDH institutions and programs that already hold a license and program registration. The search form (checked 4 November 2026) filters by secretariat, department, municipality, institution code, institution name and a yes/no quality-certification flag. That last flag is an extra, not the license.

  1. Ask the school for its institution name, code and the municipality where classes are taught.
  2. Search SIET using the place where the school says it operates, not where its sales office or WhatsApp is.
  3. Confirm the institution and your specific Spanish program appear.
  4. Ask for a copy of the license act and the program registration.

Also check the record is still alive: a license is cancelled if academic activity has not started within two years of issue (Decreto 1075, art. 2.6.3.4).

A freelance tutor or casual class is a different thing. Our guide to local tutors and classes is fine for conversation practice, but a tutor's invoice is not an institution issuing the admission certificate. If you are still deciding how intensively to study, Learning Spanish in Colombia helps, though its advice on school atmosphere is not a visa authorization.

Honest downside: SIET's own explainer page dates from 2016 and the search form is clunky. If a record is hard to find, ask the school for the code rather than assuming the worst, and then ask the secretariat directly.

University language departments

A university's personería jurídica from the Ministry of Education substitutes the ETDH operating license. That sounds like an easy yes, but it is not. A degree program still has to appear in SNIES with an active registro calificado. A non-degree Spanish course at a university language center is not automatically a SNIES program.

So ask one plain question: which authorization covers this specific course? Do not assume every university language department can sponsor the visa. Note too that acreditación en alta calidad is voluntary and is not the same as registro calificado (Ministerio de Educación, 28 June 2025). SNIES has a public program query showing institution, program code, status, level and modality.

The paper the school must sign

Per Resolución 5477, the school-side documents are:

  • An admission or enrollment certificate naming the program and its duration.
  • For a practicum, a letter from the institution stating the duration.
  • For a second or later student visa, a certificate that you attended and finished the course the earlier visa was issued for.

A health policy covering Colombia for the planned stay, for accident, illness, maternity, disability, hospitalization, death or repatriation, completes the school-related side. Documents issued abroad generally need an apostille or legalization and an official Spanish translation. Bank statements in an OAS official language that the authority can read in full are the stated exception (Art. 21).

If your file comes back with a requerimiento or a refusal, see what to do after a visa requerimiento or rejection.

When this visa is the wrong tool

  • Short stay: passport holders from visa-exempt countries are exempt from this visa procedure when the stay does not exceed 180 calendar days (Resolución 5488 de 2022).
  • Validity: up to two years. Except for virtual or distance study, more than 90 calendar days outside Colombia automatically ends it.
  • Work: the only permission is for postgraduate university students, up to 20 hours a week, after the employer reports to Migración Colombia and the Ministry of Labor. Language students do not get it, and beneficiary applications are also limited to postgraduate students.
  • Money: a self-filed Visa V needs six months of bank statements showing monthly income of at least 10 SMLMV. If a school or company backs you, read the checklist on the current Cancillería student page, because the sponsorship wording there is easy to misread.

One warning: an older English Cancillería page still shows a dollar study charge, a 10-hour weekly minimum and beneficiary visas. It does not match the current Article 36, so do not rely on it. And this category is a visitor visa, not a path to residency or a cédula.

Before you pay: the checklist

  1. Find the institution in SIET (private academy) or the program in SNIES (higher education).
  2. Get a copy of the license and program registration, or the registro calificado.
  3. Get an admission letter naming the program and duration.
  4. Match your health policy to the Article 36 risk list.
  5. Check current visa charges on Cancillería's cost page, not on a school's or blog's number.

Be wary of any school that wants full tuition before showing a record. I won't name schools here because I have not verified any in SIET or SNIES; run the check yourself, since it takes a few minutes.

Where you will live while the course runs

Once the school passes, you need a room near it. Read our neighborhood comparison for lifestyle context, then filter by city, dates and what is included. Per the marketplace supply data from 4 November 2026, Colombia Move has 35 active room listings, 8 of them recent.

Frequently Asked Questions

❓ Does any private Spanish school work for a student visa?

No. A private academy needs a secretariat operating license and a registered program that you can trace in SIET. An admission letter alone is not that proof, so ask for the license act and program record before paying (verify with the official source, as accessed).

❓ Is a university language center automatically accepted?

No. The university's Ministry personería substitutes the ETDH license, but you still need to ask which authorization covers your specific course. A degree program must also have an active registro calificado in SNIES (verify with the official source, as accessed).

❓ What should the admission letter include?

It must identify the program or grade and how long it lasts. A practicum also needs the institution's letter stating its duration. A second or later student visa needs proof that you attended and finished the earlier course (verify with the official source, as accessed).

❓ Can I study Spanish without this visa?

Passport holders from visa-exempt countries are exempt from this visa procedure when the stay does not exceed 180 calendar days. Longer study is where this category matters, and our visa guide covers the filing path (verify with the official source, as accessed).

❓ Can I work while I take Spanish classes on this visa?

No. Article 36 limits work permission to postgraduate university students, up to 20 hours a week, after the employer reports it to Migración Colombia and the Ministry of Labor. Language-school students are not covered (verify with the official source, as accessed).

❓ What if I leave Colombia during the course?

Except for virtual or distance study, more than 90 calendar days outside Colombia automatically ends the visa. Plan long trips home with that limit in mind, and confirm current wording on Cancillería's student page (verify with the official source, as accessed).

❓ What should I check before I pay the school?

Match the school in SIET or the program in SNIES, keep a copy of the license or registro, and confirm the admission certificate names the program and duration. Check current visa charges on Cancillería's cost page (verify with the official source, as accessed).
