Colombia Visa Requerimiento, Inadmitida, and Rechazada: What Each Cancillería Decision Means

A requerimiento keeps your visa file open, an inadmisión ends it but lets you refile, and a negación (rechazada) ends it with a 30-day exit and a six-month bar. Here is how to tell them apart.

The short version: a requerimiento keeps your visa file open. An inadmisión ends that filing, but you may file a new application. A negación (what most people search as rechazada) ends the filing, starts a 30-calendar-day departure period for people in Colombia, and blocks a new registration for six months.

That email from Cancillería about your SITAC file is stressful precisely because the three words sound alike. They are not. This guide explains the published rules in Resolución 5477 de 2022 and the Cancillería ABC as accessed on 2026-11-03. It is not an opinion on your file: the status and the deadline on your own SITAC notice control. If you are still choosing a category, start with the visa-type guide; this page stays on decisions.

Requerimiento: the file is still open

A requerimiento is Cancillería asking you to fix something. It can ask for missing or clearer documents, a photo that meets the technical rules, clarification of ambiguous data, extra information, or an interview. Cancillería's glossary says that when a file is requerida, no additional payments should be made. The study fee you already paid is not refunded and never committed the ministry to grant the visa, but answering a requerimiento does not cost you a second one.

What to do this week:

  1. Read the notice that arrived at the email on your application and note the deadline. The ABC says the response window is up to 10 calendar days.
  2. Re-enter your registered application from the Cancillería visa page. Do not start a new one.
  3. Upload in the Soportes section and always fill in the application number. If no slot matches, combine the files into one PDF.
  4. Check that your earlier files were not deleted, then save at Confirmación.

Do not email the documents. The ABC is clear that the answer goes on SITAC, not to official mailboxes. For missing documents or formalities, the authority can ask up to a third time (Article 11 and Article 19), and approval stays discretionary if what was requested is not fully shown.

The honest downside: if you miss the deadline, there is no tidy answer. Cancillería says an unanswered request may be inadmitida or negada. Do not assume silence is a harmless withdrawal. Read the live status in SITAC.

Inadmitida: this filing ends, a new one is allowed

Inadmisión ends that application. The applicant may present a new one. It is not the six-month bar, and the 30-day departure rule is written for negación, not for inadmisión.

Common grounds in the ABC and glossary include unmet requirements, a visa type that does not match your activity, inexact form data, illegible or altered documents, irregular entry or stay, a pending refugee-status application, and discretion. Cancillería does not publish a complete list, so do not trust anyone who claims to know the one reason in your case.

A new filing is a new filing: fix the cause first, whether that is documents, category, office or your status. Documents other than your passport should have been issued no more than three months before the application, and your passport should have at least six months of validity. Foreign documents must be apostilled or legalized and translated where required; the certified-translation guide covers how to check a translator.

One office detail trips people up: inside Colombia the form choice is "Oficina en Bogotá"; abroad you choose the consular office for your country of legal residence. If you are inside Colombia, whether you can remain after an inadmisión depends on the visa, permit or salvoconducto you still hold. Inadmisión does not grant stay by itself.

Negada or rechazada: the six-month bar

The official words are negación, negada and rechazo; searchers say rechazada. It is one decision. As quoted by the Constitutional Court in T-159 de 2025, the foreigner must leave within 30 calendar days after the negación and may not register a new application within the following six months. The later application must be made from the country of nationality or of legal permanent residence.

The 30-day exit is for someone who is in Colombia. It is not a rule about people denied from abroad. Note also that the reasons for a denial are not guaranteed to be explained to you, so a short email does not tell you which ground was used.

There is no administrative appeal

According to the Cancillería ABC, administrative appeals do not lie against approval, the validity granted, inadmisión, requerimiento, negación, termination or cancellation. A 30 September 2026 ministry letter repeats that a visa is sovereign and discretionary, not a right.

So be wary of anyone selling a "recurso de reposición" or a paid reopening. Documents for a requerimiento go only through your registered SITAC file. A fresh application after inadmisión, or after the six months, is a new application, not an appeal.

Clocks that are easy to mix up

ClockLength
Pay the study fee10 calendar days, or the filing is treated as withdrawn
Decision on a complete, paid file (Article 13)Up to 30 calendar days, longer if other entities are consulted or extra documents or an interview are requested
Answer a requerimientoUp to 10 calendar days, per the deadline on your notice
Pay the issuance fee after approval10 calendar days, or the approval is treated as withdrawn
Request e-visa corrections15 calendar days after issuance
Leave after a negación30 calendar days
New filing after a negaciónNot for six months

Article 13 is the study clock, not the requerimiento window. Older rules, such as an old five-business-day practice, no longer apply. Even a zero-tariff file must go through the payment step before it counts as filed. I am deliberately not printing fee amounts here, because tariffs are set by separate acts; check the costs section on the Cancillería site.

Staying regular while you wait

Filing is not status. If you are in Colombia, you must stay regular on a current visa, a salvoconducto or a permanence permit for the whole study, and study time does not add accrued time toward an R visa. Irregular stay can itself be a ground for inadmisión or negación.

If your current permission may expire before Cancillería decides, read the guide to filing before your visa expires and the salvoconducto guide. My practical advice: open your SITAC status on a fixed day each week and never rely on the email alone.

Preguntas frecuentes

❓ Is a requerimiento the same as a rejected visa?

No. A requerimiento means your file is still open and Cancillería wants documents, clearer data or an interview. Answer on SITAC within the deadline on the notice, which the ABC caps at up to 10 calendar days. No extra payment is due for the request itself. (verifica en la fuente oficial)

❓ What is the difference between inadmitida and rechazada?

Inadmitida ends that filing and you may submit a new application. Rechazada, officially negada, also ends it, but requires departure within 30 calendar days for people in Colombia and blocks a new registration for six months, from the country of nationality or legal permanent residence. (verifica en la fuente oficial)

❓ If I ignore the requerimiento, is the application simply withdrawn?

Do not count on that. Cancillería's applicant guidance says an unanswered request may be inadmitida or negada. The result can differ, so check your live SITAC status and the deadline on your own notice rather than assuming a clean withdrawal. (verifica en la fuente oficial)

❓ Can I appeal a negación or an inadmisión?

No. Cancillería states that administrative appeals do not lie against inadmisión, requerimiento or negación. A new application is a new filing, not an appeal, so ignore offers to reopen your case for a fee. (verifica en la fuente oficial)

No. Filing alone does not create regular status. If you are in Colombia you must stay regular on a current visa, salvoconducto or permanence permit throughout the study, and the waiting time does not count toward an R visa. (verifica en la fuente oficial)

❓ Do I have to pay again when they ask for documents?

No additional payment is due just because your file is requerida. The study fee already paid is not refundable and did not guarantee approval. For current amounts, use the costs section of the Cancillería site. (verifica en la fuente oficial)

❓ Where do I upload the documents they asked for?

Only in your registered SITAC application, under Soportes, entering your application number and saving at Confirmación. Do not send them to an official mailbox, because the ABC says that is not a valid response. (verifica en la fuente oficial)
