The word "spouse" matters. Cancilleria separates the married-spouse route from the Visa M Companero(a) Permanente, which is for a de facto permanent partner of a Colombian citizen. Both are relationship-based migrant visas, but the evidence, validity period, and resident-visa timing are not identical.

Spouse Visa vs Permanent Partner Visa

If you are legally married to a Colombian citizen, the normal route is the Visa M Conyuge. Cancilleria's spouse page asks for a Colombian civil marriage registry issued within the previous three months, plus documents showing the Colombian spouse is requesting the visa and that the couple actually lives together or intends to do so.

If you are not married but have a recognized permanent union, the route is different. Cancilleria lists the Visa M Companero(a) Permanente for a de facto marital union with a Colombian citizen. Proof is usually a public deed, judicial decision, conciliation act, or certificate, and the formalization date must generally be more than one year before applying. Who Qualifies for the Spouse Visa?

You are looking at the right visa if all of this is true:

• You are a foreign citizen.
• You are legally married to a Colombian citizen.
• The marriage is registered in Colombia, or you can obtain the Colombian civil marriage registry required for the visa file.
• You and your Colombian spouse intend to live together in Colombia.
• You can apply while in valid immigration status, or from outside Colombia through the appropriate Colombian consular office.

This visa is not for a fiance, future wedding plan, or marriage that cannot be supported by Colombian civil registry documents. A pending visa application also does not make you regular in Colombia, so keep your tourist permission or other status valid while applying from inside the country.

Required Documents for the Colombia Spouse Visa

The file has spouse-specific documents plus general visa documents. Based on Cancilleria guidance checked July 8, 2026, expect the following.

Specific spouse visa documents

• Colombian civil marriage registry. Cancilleria asks for an authentic copy issued within the three months before the visa application.
• Request letter from the Colombian spouse. The Colombian spouse should request the visa for the foreign spouse and state that there is effective cohabitation. The letter should include phone, physical address, email address, and a simple copy of the Colombian spouse's cedula.
• Special power. Cancilleria lists a special power with recognition of content and signature before a notary or Colombian consul, authorizing the foreign spouse to request the visa.
• Migration movement certificates. The official spouse page asks for movement certificates from Migracion Colombia for both the foreign applicant and the Colombian spouse.

General visa documents

• Passport. Cancilleria's general guidance says the passport or travel document should generally be valid for at least six months, be in good condition, and have free pages.
• Photo and online form. The virtual visa form requires uploaded documents and a JPG photo within the platform's size rules.
• Recent supporting documents. Except for passport/travel document, supporting documents are generally expected to be issued within three months before application.
• Apostilles, legalizations, and translations. Foreign public documents generally need apostille or legalization and official Spanish translation unless a specific exception applies.

How Much Does the Spouse Visa Cost?

How to Apply Step by Step

1. Confirm the visa category. If you are married to a Colombian citizen, review the official Visa M Conyuge page. If you are not legally married, compare the permanent partner route instead.
2. Collect documents with dates in mind. The civil marriage registry and other supporting documents should be recent. Do not request them so early that they age out before submission.
3. Apostille/legalize and translate foreign documents. If a document was issued outside Colombia, check whether it needs apostille/legalization and official Spanish translation.
4. Complete the online visa form. If applying from outside Colombia, select the nearest Colombian consular office. If applying from inside Colombia while regular, Cancilleria's general guidance points applicants to the Bogota office option.
5. Pay the study fee. Cancilleria says payment of the study fee is due within 10 calendar days.
6. Watch for requests. If the authority asks for more information or an appearance, respond quickly. The general guidance gives applicants up to 10 calendar days to provide additional information through SITAC.
7. Pay the issuance fee if approved. Once approved, Cancilleria says the issuance fee must be paid within 10 calendar days.
8. Download and review the e-visa. Check names, dates, passport number, visa category, and work authorization. If there is an error, use Cancilleria's correction process promptly.

Cancilleria's general guidance gives the authority up to 30 calendar days after complete documentation and study-fee payment, though checks with other entities can extend the timeline. Build in buffer.

After Approval: Cedula, Work, and Absences

The e-visa is not the end of the process. With a qualifying visa, you normally need to register and request a cedula de extranjeria with Migracion Colombia. This is the foreigner ID used for banking, employment onboarding, health insurance, leases, and many app-based services.

Watch absences too. Cancilleria says M visas can lose validity if the holder is absent from Colombia for more than 180 continuous calendar days within each 365-day period from issuance.

The Resident Visa Path: 3 Years, 5 Years, and the Current Confusion

Careful wording matters here. Cancilleria's resident visa table, checked July 8, 2026, lists M Conyuge at 3 years and M Companero(a) Permanente at 5 years.
