Frequently asked questions

How is CDT interest calculated?

Banks quote an effective annual rate (E.A.). For d days, interest = amount × ((1 + E.A.)^(d/365) − 1). Example: COP 10,000,000 at 9% E.A. for 360 days earns about COP 887,140 before withholding. Some banks use 360 days, so small differences are normal.

How much withholding tax does a CDT pay?

4% of the interest, from the first peso (Decreto 1625 de 2016, art. 1.2.4.2.83). Savings-account interest is withheld at 7%. It is an advance on your income tax: you subtract it in your annual return.

What is the real return of a CDT?

The net return minus inflation. With 2025 inflation of 5.1% (DANE), a CDT at 9% E.A. returns about 3.37% a year in real terms after withholding. If inflation is higher than your net rate, you lose purchasing power.

Is my money in a CDT insured?

CDTs issued by banks and other institutions supervised by the Superintendencia Financiera are covered by Fogafín deposit insurance up to its legal limit per person and institution. Check the current limit and that the issuer is supervised before investing.

Can I withdraw a CDT before it matures?

Not usually: a CDT is a fixed-term deposit, so the money stays until maturity. Some CDTs can be sold on the secondary market or have special conditions; ask your bank. If you may need the money, choose a shorter term.
