How do I get a cédula de extranjería?
If you hold a Colombian visa valid for more than 3 months and are 7 or older, you must register it and get your cédula de extranjería at Migración Colombia within 15 calendar days of entering the country or of the visa being issued. You fill in the online FUT form, book an appointment, bring your passport and pay COP 294,000 in 2026. The physical card is ready in 10 business days.

Who needs it
Foreigners aged 7 and over who are principal holders or beneficiaries of a visa valid for more than 3 months. Children aged 0 to 6 only register the visa (free) and do not get a cédula.
What you need
- Be a foreigner aged 7+ with a valid visa of more than 3 months (principal or beneficiary).
- Online Formulario Único de Trámites (FUT), with 1 PDF showing your passport data page and visa.
- Original valid passport on the day of the appointment, plus your FUT filing number.
- Minors aged 7 to 17: attend with a parent or legal guardian and proof of the relationship (birth certificate, family book).
- Payment by debit or credit card at the service center or a bank deposit slip (cash is not accepted).
Step by step
- 1Fill in the FUT at apps.migracioncolombia.gov.co/registro and attach the passport and visa PDF. Keep the filing number.
- 2Book your appointment at apps.migracioncolombia.gov.co/citas, choosing the nearest Centro Facilitador de Servicios Migratorios (CFSM).
- 3Attend the appointment with your original passport, valid visa and FUT number. Your fingerprints and photo are taken there.
- 4Pay the COP 294,000 during the appointment by debit or credit card (Visa or Mastercard) or with a deposit slip.
- 5You receive a digital receipt (contraseña) with a QR code that is valid immediately while your card is printed.
- 6Check Migración's 'CE para entrega' page to see if it is ready and pick it up at the same CFSM after 10 business days.
Tips and common mistakes
- The 15-day window is calendar days, not business days. Missing it can lead to a fine, so book as soon as you have your visa.
- Migración staff never accept cash. Be wary of anyone charging to 'get you an appointment' or asking for payment outside the CFSM.
- Check your details when you receive the card: you have 30 calendar days to request a correction for errors.
- If you get a new visa you must register it again and get a new cédula; children turning 18 have 15 days to apply for theirs.
