Feria de las Flores, Carnaval de Barranquilla or Festival Vallenato: I help you choose which one is worth the trip based on your plan, your music, and how much you can organize.

Every year the same lists appear: "the 10 festivals you have to see in Colombia." The problem: nobody has the time or money to see them all, and you almost always choose wrong. The real question isn't which is "the best," but which fits your plan: the music you like, how much of a crowd you can handle, and how much you can organize in advance.
Here I compare the three big ones—Feria de las Flores in Medellín, Carnaval de Barranquilla, and Festival de la Leyenda Vallenata in Valledupar—so you can pick one that's really worth the trip.
The first thing you should know
- Feria de las Flores (Medellín): flowers, silleteros, and open-air concerts. The easiest to plan.
- Carnaval de Barranquilla: huge parades and Caribbean music. Requires booking further in advance.
- Festival Vallenato (Valledupar): for those who travel for the music more than the party.
- Confirm the dates on the official pages before buying tickets; programs get updated.
- All three fill the city: the earlier you book, the better.
Feria de las Flores: to fall in love with Medellín
If you've never been to a big festival in Colombia, it's the friendliest to start with. The Feria de las Flores fills Medellín with flowers, concerts, markets, and the famous Desfile de Silleteros, where farmers from Santa Elena carry huge floral arrangements on their backs. In 2026 the official program runs from July 31 to August 9, although some tourism pages mark a different day: check the official agenda before finalizing your trip.
The good: the city is easy to get around and has plenty of accommodation. The downside: August is high season and prices go up. It's my recommendation for families and first-timers.
Carnaval de Barranquilla: the most intense
It's the biggest and the most demanding to plan. The central days of Carnival 2026 run from February 14 to 17, with pre-carnival events weeks before. The Batalla de Flores—the flagship parade—is scheduled for February 14 on Via 40. It's a UNESCO Cultural Heritage site and it shows: parades, cumbia, mapalé, and non-stop energy.
The only hassle is logistics: the city fills up, accommodation flies off the shelves, and it's worth buying bleachers in advance. If you like Caribbean music and aren't scared of crowds, it's worth every peso.

Festival Vallenato: for those who travel for the music
The Festival de la Leyenda Vallenata in Valledupar is different. It's not a street carnival: it's a music competition where accordion players compete for the title of Rey Vallenato. In 2026 it runs from April 29 to May 2. If vallenato moves you, it's your plan; if you're looking for parades and costumes, it might feel like too little.
My advice: combine it with getting to know Valledupar and Cesar—its gastronomy and accordion culture—so the trip is worth it even if you don't make it to all the concerts.
How to choose based on your plan
- First trip or family: Feria de las Flores. Simple logistics and atmosphere for everyone.
- Party fanatic: Carnaval de Barranquilla. Book months in advance.
- Music lover: Festival Vallenato. You go for the music, not the parade.
- Work remote: Medellín or Valledupar let you combine partying with office days.
- Short getaway: take advantage of a long weekend and plan a weekend trip without spending everything.
The Sagrado Corazón holiday, which in 2026 falls on Monday, June 15, is an ideal long weekend for a short getaway or to get ahead on bookings for a bigger festival. Where to stay and how not to overpay
At a festival, accommodation is what gets most complicated. Book early, stay close to events, and compare before paying. For tickets, use only the official event pages and recognized operators: during high season, fake pages and "events" circulate.
