Free things in Colombia: we're launching a section to give away what you no longer use

Today someone gave away a sofa in Medellín and the platform didn't even have a way to say "free." So we built the entire section the same day: here is how it works, how you post, and how you claim what others are giving away.

Today, July 1, 2026, something small happened that forced us to build something big. A user in Belén Fátima, Medellín, posted a sofa to give away. They weren't asking for money: just for someone to pick it up. And our platform had no way to say "free" — the ad went up without a price, with the word squeezed into the title as best as possible.

That same day, we decided that giving things away deserves its own space. We launched the free stuff section: an open place where what you no longer use finds a second home in your city, without commissions, without closed groups, and without any hassle.

What is the free stuff section

It is a new category in the marketplace, on the same level as furniture, electronics, or vehicles. Every ad posted there is set with a fixed $0 price and a green "Free" label — there is no way to make a mistake or charge by accident. It’s for furniture, appliances, clothes, toys, books, planters: anything in good condition that you would rather give away than throw out.

You can find it in the search bar, in the main page filters, and directly at colombiamove.com/categoria/gratis. The sofa from Belén Fátima already lives there, as the founding ad of the section.

Why we built this

Giving things away is a huge custom in Colombia. Every move, every relocation abroad, and every renovation leaves good items without a destination. Today, that generosity lives in Facebook groups like "furniture giveaways" — very active communities, but closed: you have to ask for permission to join, posts get lost on the wall after a few hours, and none of it appears when you search Google for "free stuff in Medellín".

American classifieds understood this decades ago: the "free stuff" section on Craigslist is one of the most beloved parts of that site, and there are people who have furnished half a house with it. We wanted the same for Colombia, but open: ads that anyone can see without an account, that can be found on Google, and where contact is direct with the person giving the item away. It is the same philosophy as our free classified ads, taken to its natural conclusion: here, even the item is free.

There is also the underlying reason: every piece of furniture that changes homes is one less on the street or in the landfill. The circular economy sounds abstract until it's your neighbor picking up the washing machine you were going to throw away.

This is how it works: the giver hands it over, the person in need picks it up. No money involved.

How to give something away (it takes a minute)

  1. Post your ad and choose the Free category. We don't ask for a price: the ad is automatically set to $0 and shows the green label.
  2. Upload one or two real photos and say which neighborhood it's in. If it's large — a sofa, a fridge — clarify if it has to go down stairs or if there is an elevator.
  3. Reply to messages and arrange the pickup. The rule of thumb we recommend: the first person who can pick it up soonest gets it. State this in the ad and you'll save yourself some arguments.

Would you rather sell instead of give away? That door remains open as always: you can use our guide on where to sell used items in Colombia — with no commissions either.

How to claim something for free

  • Check the section often: the good stuff flies. The ads show the neighborhood and city so you don't cross half the city for a chair.
  • Write short and concrete: "I'm interested, I can pick it up this afternoon" wins over a "is it still available?" without a plan.
  • Bring help and transport for large items. The person giving it away almost never does deliveries: pickup is on you.

The golden rule: free is free

If someone asks you for a "shipping cost," a deposit "to hold it," or any payment for a gifted item, it is not a gift: it is the most common scam trick in these types of sections, reported over and over in gift groups around the world. Do not transfer anything, cut off the conversation, and use the report button on the ad. Real gifts are handed over in person, in a public place or at the front desk, and no one rushes you to pay anything.

Frequently Asked Questions

❓ Is everything really free? Are there hidden costs?

Yes, everything is free — in both senses. Since the launch of the section in July 2026, the price of these ads is fixed at $0 by the system and cannot be edited; and posting on Colombia Move costs nothing and charges no commission. Anyone who wants to charge for an item must post it in its normal sales category.

❓ Where do I post what I want to give away?

Go to Post, choose the Free category, upload photos, and that's it: no price or fine print. This is how the section has worked since its debut in July 2026, and the ad is visible in the free stuff section of your city and in the site's search engine.

❓ What things can be given away?

The current rule is simple: any legal object in usable condition. Furniture, appliances, clothes, toys, books, plants, leftover construction materials. If it's so damaged that no one would want to carry it, better take it to a recycling point.

❓ Do I need an account to see what is being given away?

No. The section is open: you can look at all the ads without registering. You only need an account to post or to write via the internal chat — although many advertisers also leave their WhatsApp for direct contact.

❓ How do I avoid scams if they ask me for money for something "free"?

Report it from the ad that same day. A charge for a gift — "shipping," deposit, "holding fee" — is the classic sign of a scam in these sections, and that ad should not remain published. The delivery of a real gift is in person and without payments of any kind.

❓ Can I ask for things instead of giving them away?

For now — as of July 2026 — the section is designed for those giving away items. If you need something specific, check it often, as new ads appear first, or post your search as a "wanted" ad in the item's category.

Do you have something in good condition that you no longer use? See what people are giving away or post your own and let it be useful to someone in your city.
