How do I check and pay my traffic fines on SIMIT?

On the SIMIT portal run by the Federación Colombiana de Municipios you can check your comparendos and fines for free with your ID number or plate, and pay them by PSE or at partner banks. Paying early and taking the curso pedagógico gets you a 50% or 25% discount. The SIMIT paz y salvo can be downloaded for free once you owe nothing.

Independent guide by Colombia Move. Not a government website: the procedure itself is done on the official portal linked here.

Cost
Checking and generating the SIMIT paz y salvo is free. The fine depends on the offence; with the curso pedagógico you get 50% off (first 5 business days, or 11 for a photo ticket) or 25% (up to 20 business days, or 27 for a photo ticket). The course has its own fee.
How long
The lookup is instant. Payments can take a few business days to show up in SIMIT.

Who needs it

Any driver or vehicle owner in Colombia, including foreigners with a cédula de extranjería, PPT or passport. It matters before buying or selling a car or motorbike and before renewing your licence.

What you need

  • Your ID number (cédula, cédula de extranjería, PPT or passport) or the vehicle's plate.
  • To pay online: a bank account enabled for PSE.
  • For the discount: proof you took the curso pedagógico on traffic rules within the deadline.
  • The comparendo number (shown in the lookup or on the photo-ticket notice).

Step by step

  1. 1Go to fcm.org.co/simit and search by ID number or plate.
  2. 2Review each comparendo: date, offence, traffic authority, amount and whether a discount applies.
  3. 3For the discount, take the curso pedagógico at an authorised centre within the deadline (5 or 20 business days for an in-person ticket; 11 or 27 for a photo ticket).
  4. 4Pay on the SIMIT portal by PSE or at the partner banks and agents SIMIT lists.
  5. 5If you dispute the ticket, don't pay: request a hearing with the traffic authority that issued it within the legal deadline.
  6. 6Once you are clear, generate and download the SIMIT paz y salvo for free.

Tips and common mistakes

  • Only use fcm.org.co/simit. Many look-alike 'SIMIT by plate' sites are not official and may charge you or harvest your data.
  • Photo-ticket deadlines run from notification, not from the day of the offence. Keep your address updated in RUNT so you hear about them in time.
  • Before buying a used car, check SIMIT for both the seller and the plate: a transfer can't go through with unpaid fines.
  • Under Ley 769 de 2002 the authority has three years from the offence to collect a fine. Still, check whether enforcement (cobro coactivo) has started before assuming a fine has lapsed.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if I have photo tickets?
Search your ID or plate on the SIMIT portal. Photo tickets show up alongside in-person tickets once the traffic authority reports them.
How much discount do I get for paying early?
50% if you pay and take the course within the first 5 business days (11 for a photo ticket), or 25% up to day 20 (27 for a photo ticket). No course, no discount.
Does the SIMIT paz y salvo cost anything?
No. Generating the paz y salvo and the statement on SIMIT is free.
Can a foreigner check SIMIT?
Yes. Search with the document type and number used on the ticket, such as cédula de extranjería, PPT or passport, or by plate.
