If you drink filtered or drip coffee every day and your cup tastes great on Monday and bitter on Tuesday, the problem is almost never the coffee. It's the grind. A burr grinder like the OXO Brew conical burr is exactly the kind of appliance that tackles that problem, which is why it's worth understanding what it does before buying any of them.

I'll be blunt: I would skip the pretty accessories (scales with apps, designer pitchers) until the grinder is sorted. First the beans, then the grind size, and only then everything else.

Whole bean or pre-ground: it depends on your real routine

Whole beans preserve aromas better until the moment you grind, according to the guide from the roaster Andinas Coffee. If you're going to grind right before brewing, buy whole beans. If you don't have a grinder, no problem: ask the roaster to grind for your method.

Some Colombian roasters offer the same coffee as whole bean and ground fine, medium, or coarse, as shown on the Café Cultor product page. It's a decent solution while you decide whether to buy a grinder.

My opinion: if you drink one or two cups a day, buy small bags of whole beans. A large bag left open for weeks is the easiest way to lose what you paid for.

Blades vs. burrs: what you can repeat tomorrow

A blade grinder chops unevenly: fine powder and coarse chunks come out at the same time. A burr grinder crushes the beans between two surfaces and lets you return to the same grind size when something tasted good. That repeatability is what changes your daily cup.

Think of it this way: if you can't repeat the grind, you can't make corrections. A bitter coffee and a sour one come from the same problem of uneven particles, and then you blame the bean.

What's the downside? Burr grinders usually cost more than blade grinders, take up more space, and are noisy first thing in the morning. If someone in your home sleeps until six, keep that in mind.

A starting point by method

The roasters' practical rule is simple. Adjust afterward based on taste, because every grinder and every bean behaves differently.

MethodStarting grindIf it tastes wrong
French pressCoarseBitter: coarser. Watery: a bit finer.
Filter (V60, drip coffee maker)MediumBitter: coarser. Sour or weak: finer.
EspressoFineYou'll need a grinder with fine adjustment and patience.

I won't give you espresso microns: the sources I consulted don't specify them, and any number you saw out there would be made up. Change one step at a time and taste.

To store beans: an airtight container, away from heat, humidity, and light, and not in the fridge. Grind only what you're going to brew.

What a filter grinder measures in a lab

The European Coffee Brewing Centre (ECBC) certifies home grinders for filter coffee with a specific test. The particle distribution must meet: more than 850 µm, 12% or less; between 425 and 850 µm, 68% or more; less than 425 µm, 20% or less, with a tolerance of ±5%. It also limits heating to a maximum of 10 °C in a 60 g test.

The cup test uses 60 g of coffee per liter of water, water between 92 and 96 °C, 4 to 6 minutes of contact, extraction of 18 to 22%, and TDS of 1.30 to 1.50%. Note: this is a laboratory protocol for filter coffee, not an espresso recipe or a requirement in your kitchen.

What is it useful for? To understand why particle size matters: too fine over-extracts, too coarse under-extracts, and an even grinder reduces both extremes.

On what "specialty coffee" is: the National Federation of Coffee Growers of Colombia defines it by consistent, verifiable, and sustainable attributes (origin, environment, social commitment) for which the consumer pays more. It doesn't reduce it to a score, and the Specialty Coffee Association now uses the Coffee Value Assessment, not a single number.

What to look for in a grinder like the OXO Brew

According to the Amazon listing, the OXO Brew Conical Burr Electric Coffee Bean Grinder (color Storm Blue, 12 oz) has conical burrs and a rating of 4.3 out of 5 with more than 23,000 reviews. This is a reference based on user reviews, not our own testing.

It's a good fit if you drink filtered or French press coffee daily and want a repeatable grind without complications. It's not a good fit if your passion is demanding espresso: there you need a grinder with much finer adjustment, and it's worth checking its specifications before paying.

Importing it to Colombia

Shipments from the United States are treated differently depending on value. Verify the current VAT exemption figure for purchases under 200 USD at dian.gov.co and calculate the final price with freight and mailbox service before deciding. And a safety note: read the appliance's label before plugging it in, and don't use a unit marked only for 220–240 V as if your home's power supply were compatible. You can also compare with grinders already sold in local stores.

If you prefer not to import, there are burr grinders at Colombian online stores; always compare warranty and spare parts. And if you don't grind at home today and want to try well-ground coffee out, our list of cafés with wifi for working gives you options.

Monday, October 12, 2026

October 12 is a paid rest day under article 177 of the Substantive Labor Code (text of Law 51 of 1983). If it doesn't fall on a Monday, the rest is moved to the following Monday. In 2026 it falls on a Monday, so nothing is moved: the long weekend runs from Saturday, October 10 to Monday, October 12.

Use it for something small and useful: buy a small bag of beans, leave the grinder at a middle setting, and brew the same recipe three mornings in a row, changing only one click of grind. That way you find your sweet spot without overspending.

If you're moving from brewing to selling roasted and ground coffee, check the INVIMA sanitary notification for roasted and ground coffee, and if you sell farm-direct beans, the guide to direct-origin specialty coffee. And if you stick with the OXO, here again is the grinder link.

Frequently asked questions

❓ Is whole bean or pre-ground coffee better?

Whole bean is better if you'll grind when brewing; pre-ground is better if you don't have a grinder and ask the roaster for the grind your method needs. In both cases, buy small bags and store them tightly closed so they don't lose aroma.

❓ Burr grinder or blade grinder?

Burrs let you return to the same grind size; blades chop unevenly, with powder and coarse chunks at the same time. For French press or filter you don't need an espresso grinder, just one that is consistent and adjustable.

❓ How fine should I grind for French press, filter, or espresso?

Coarse for French press, medium for filter, and fine for espresso. It's a starting point: adjust one step at a time based on taste, without looking for espresso micron figures that aren't in the ECBC filter test.

❓ How much coffee and at what temperature should I brew filter coffee?

The ECBC filter grinder test uses 60 g of coffee per liter and water between 92 and 96 °C, with 4 to 6 minutes of contact. At home you adjust by taste; it's not an espresso standard or a requirement (verify with the official source).

❓ How do I store beans in the kitchen?

In an airtight container, away from heat, humidity, and light, and not in the fridge. Grind only what you're going to brew. It's a roaster practice, not a technical standard, but it keeps the beans from losing aroma quickly.

❓ Is October 12, 2026 a holiday?

Yes, it is a paid rest day, and in 2026 it falls on a Monday, so it isn't moved. This guide does not calculate surcharges for working that day; confirm your case with the Ministry of Labor (verify with the official source).

❓ Can I sell coffee I grind at home?

Grinding for your own cup is not the same as selling roasted and ground coffee, which has its own sanitary procedure. Review the INVIMA sanitary notification guide already published on this blog before selling (verify with the official source).
