Santa Marta is one of the most affordable coastal capitals to live in: rents are notably cheaper than in Bogotá or Medellín, and life revolves around the sea. Areas to consider: El Rodadero (touristic, everything nearby, more noise in season), Bello Horizonte and Pozos Colorados (quieter, towards the south), the Centro Histórico (charm and nightlife, intense heat), and Taganga (fishing village/backpacker vibe). Keep in mind the heat all year round, that water and electricity can fail more often than in the interior, and that in high season (December-January, Holy Week) prices go up.
