Home office: keys to working remotely with comfort and order

Before buying a chair, clarify if it is telework, remote work, or work from home. Then set up a comfortable, organized workspace and have a set finishing time.

A comfortable desk is not of much use if no one knows what time the day ends. That is why, in a home office, comfort and order mean two things: a defined station and a defined exit. And before spending on furniture, it is worth knowing what your employer owes you, because telework, remote work, and work-from-home are not synonyms.

For your cell phone, which almost always ends up lying next to the keyboard, a highly valued option is the Lamicall foldable stand. Further down, I will tell you who it makes sense for and who it does not.

First: which of the three regimes are you in?

Colombian law separates three figures. The telework (Law 1221 of 2008) is a relationship of dependency that uses information technologies without a fixed presence at the headquarters. The remote work (Law 2121 of 2021) is a voluntary modality in which the entire relationship is remote, and the law itself states that it does not share the elements of telework or work-from-home. The work-from-home (Law 2088 of 2021) is a temporary authorization due to occasional, exceptional, or special circumstances, and it does not change the original contract.

If the compiled text of Law 1221 sounds like a hybrid to you, that modality is described as at least two or three days a week at home and the rest at the employer's headquarters.

A practical warning: if you are a freelancer, a foreign contractor, or work with your own laptop without an employment relationship of these types, no one automatically owes you a chair, internet, or allowance. In that case, the station is your own investment, and it is best to treat it as such.

What must be in writing according to your regime

In telework, Decree 1227 of 2022 requires that the contract or employment arrangement describe the weekly schedule, equipment and software, digital security duties, the custody and return of equipment, and the minimum ergonomic and technological conditions of the station. The employer provides the computers, software, and programs required by the contracted work. If your contract does not mention any of this, ask before buying.

In remote work, the employer must provide the technological tools and cover energy and internet and/or phone, in addition to any travel they order. The parties can agree on a monthly compensatory allowance, and according to Decree 555 of 2022, that amount cannot be lower than the national transportation allowance. That is a floor for what is agreed upon, not an automatic payment. The person in remote work does not receive the legal transportation allowance, except for proportional payment if the employer calls them to the office and other requirements are met.

In work-from-home, the authorization lasts up to three months, can be extended once for the same term, and only continues as long as the circumstances persist. The employer is primarily responsible for the equipment, unless you agree to use your own. If you change the place where you work, you must notify the address to the ARL.

The 2026 allowance, without confusion

Since January 1, 2026, the transportation allowance is $249,095 for those who earn up to twice the minimum wage, where there is public transportation (Decree 1470 of 2025). Only in work-from-home, those who already had the right to that allowance and earn up to two minimum wages receive it as digital connectivity allowance. They are not added together, and it does not apply to just anyone working from their living room.

Five-minute ergonomic checkup

There is no single national desk measurement in the cited regulations. What there is, is a technical guide from the Labor Risk Fund (published in 2019) with useful reviews as a self-checkup:

  • Feet fully supported or with a footrest, so that the hip and knee are close to 90 degrees.
  • Chair with a five-point base.
  • Items used constantly (mouse, phone, notebook) at 25 cm or less reach.
  • Seated space of at least 150 cm by 150 cm and 80 cm to move the chair.
  • At least 60 cm of legroom under the desk.

INVIMA, in its own institutional guide for telework requirements, describes a surface about 65 to 75 cm high and a tabletop of at least 80 cm by 120 cm. These are that entity's figures for their stations, not a measurement that every house must meet.

My criteria: I would put the money first into a chair with lumbar support and having the screen in front of my body, with the keyboard and mouse at the same level. The rest is secondary. The bad side is that a good chair cannot be improvised at a dining table, and if your apartment is small, you might have to accept a narrower desk.

Order in a small desk

Three rules are enough: a single work surface, a single charging point, and cables away from the area where you walk. For details on channels and ties, you have your own cable and desk organization guide.

Regarding electricity, do not assume anything: compare the charger plate with the outlet you actually have, and avoid chaining power strips one after another. If something gets hot, stop using it.

A small accessory: the cell phone stand

This section is research based on specifications and buyer opinions, not a physical test. The Lamicall stand appears on Amazon with a 4.8 out of 5 rating and more than 38,000 reviews. It is a simple, foldable product designed to keep the phone in view during video calls or to check verification codes without picking it up from the desk.

It is useful for you if you use your cell phone as a second screen for messages or make many video calls. It is not useful for you if you already have a monitor arm with an integrated mount, or if you do not want to wait for an international shipment. Regarding the final cost, confirm with the DIAN the current VAT and tariff conditions for purchases abroad before paying; verify the current figure. None of this is essential, and no employer is obligated to buy this accessory for you. It is optional.

Closing the day: disconnection and schedule

A good station also turns off. Law 2191 of 2022 establishes that the worker may refrain from answering work-related contacts outside of regular hours, legal maximums, or agreed hours, and during vacations and leave. The employer should not give orders outside of that time, and every company needs an internal disconnection policy with a complaint channel. A clause that waives this right has no effect.

There are exceptions: management, trusted, and handling positions; roles requiring permanent availability; and justified force majeure. Pay attention to another point: teleworkers are exempt from ordinary work hours, overtime, and night shift regulations, but if the work schedule is verifiable and the employer requires work beyond the hours in Article 161 of the Substantive Labor Code, or assigns a heavier workload than normal, the same surcharge treatment applies as to any worker (Law 1221).

The routine that works: a fixed end time, a single work channel, and the laptop put away outside the living room. An isolated message does not equate to workplace harassment; demonstrable persistence does.

Weekend of October 12, 2026

October 12 is the Day of Ethnic and Cultural Diversity of the Colombian Nation and a national holiday (Law 2347 of 2024). In 2026, it falls on a Monday, so the weekend from Saturday, October 10 to Monday, October 12 is useful for something concrete: assembling the chair, centering the monitor, doing the checklist above, and, on Monday, practicing real disconnection.

If you offer remote operational support from that desk

With the workstation ready, some offer support, data, or coordination from a distance. A useful profile states what tasks are performed, during what hours, if you work with your own equipment, and what coverage area you serve. Do not publish your home address or photos showing the building entrance or an identity document; a photo of the desk is enough.

According to Colombia Move listings as of October 7, 2026, the operational category had no active listings within the jobs section. That does not prove there is demand or salary, only that a clear profile is visible there.

And if the new chair or monitor replaces old ones, don't set up a sale from scratch: the guide to selling used monitors and office furniture already explains how to do it.

Frequently asked questions

❓ Are telework, remote work, and working from home the same thing?

No, they are three different legal statuses. Telework is under Law 1221 of 2008, remote work under Law 2121 of 2021, and working from home under Law 2088 of 2021, which is a temporary authorization that does not change the employment contract. Each entails different duties for the employer (verify with the official source).

❓ Does my employer have to buy my chair and pay for my internet?

Only if you are in one of those employment relationships, and it depends on which one. In telework, the employer provides computing tools and the contract sets ergonomic requirements. In remote work, it also includes energy and internet and/or telephone. In work from home, they are responsible for equipment unless otherwise agreed. An independent contractor does not have that right (verify with the official source).

❓ Is the 2026 connectivity allowance $249,095 for those working from home?

Not for everyone. $249,095 is the transportation allowance as of January 1, 2026, for those earning up to two minimum wages where public transport exists. In work from home, whoever already had the right to that allowance receives it as connectivity, without adding it to the transportation allowance (verify with the official source).

❓ Can they message me on WhatsApp after work hours?

Law 2191 of 2022 states that the employer should not give orders outside of ordinary, maximum legal, or agreed work hours, nor during vacations or rest periods. There are exceptions for management, trusted, and handling positions, permanent availability, and force majeure, and any clause waiving this right is ineffective (verify with the official source).

❓ Does the law require an 80 by 120 cm desk?

There is no single national measurement in the cited standards. The Occupational Risk Fund guide suggests a self-check: feet supported, five-point base, objects within 25 cm, and space to move the chair. The 80 by 120 cm measurements are from the INVIMA guide (verify with the official source).

❓ Does any power strip work for the computer?

Do not assume so. Compare the charger label with the wall outlet you actually have at home and avoid daisy-chaining power strips. If the plug or cable gets hot, stop using it and ask a qualified electrical technician for an inspection (verify with the official source).

❓ What data should I include if I offer remote operational support?

Your trade, your schedule, if you use your own tools, and the coverage area. Do not publish your home address or photos of your door or documents. The profile is published in the jobs section, operational category, and it is best to describe concrete tasks rather than general promises.
