A tower that has been sitting in a corner for years, a graphics card you've already swapped for another, a disk left over from the last upgrade: all of that can be sold, but not the same way as a cell phone. Hardware buyers are distrustful by nature, and with good reason. This guide is for publishing your tower or your parts with proof that someone technical can check, without paying a commission.

If what you have is a laptop, it's better to read the guide to used laptops, because battery and charge cycles are a different topic. Here we stick to desktops and components.

Quick answer:

  • Ad title: type of part, exact model, capacity and delivery city.
  • Tests for each part, with the defects written in the same block.
  • Erase the disk before letting it go and remove the device from your Microsoft account.
  • Price based on comparison with local ads for the same model.
  • Don't release the part until you see the deposit in your bank's app.

How to title and describe the ad

Forget "powerful" or "gamer" on their own. A hardware buyer searches by model. Write, for example, "Video card [exact model], [memory], delivery in [city and neighborhood]". Without a model, nobody can compare prices, and your ad looks like one from someone who doesn't know what they're selling.

Also, Law 1480 of 2011 (art. 15) requires that whoever publicly offers a used product state it precisely and prominently. Put "used" in the title and don't hide it at the end. If the tower is still on Windows 10, note it: Microsoft ended free support on October 14, 2025.

What tests to show depending on the part

A screenshot doesn't replace turning on the machine in front of the buyer, but it greatly reduces repeated questions over WhatsApp. These are the ones I would include:

  • Complete tower: photo with the panel open, short video powered on and reaching the desktop, and a list of parts with models.
  • Video card: screenshot from GPU-Z with name, type and amount of memory, plus a photo of the physical card and its ports. GPU-Z shows the identity, it does not certify that the card is healthy.
  • Disk: reading from CrystalDiskInfo with status, hours of use and model. It is a SMART reading from a third-party utility, not a certificate. If it shows "Caution", write it down; on hard drives it may be due to reallocated or pending sectors.
  • RAM, processor and motherboard: photo of the silkscreened model and, if you can, the system reading. The full serial number isn't needed in the public photo.

And most importantly: state the defect. A noisy fan, a dead USB port, a doubtful sector. If you write it in the ad, it stops being a hidden defect.

Erase the disk before releasing anything

A disk holds emails, photos and sometimes third-party data. First back up whatever you want to keep. For a PC with Windows, Microsoft recommends using Remove everything with Clean data enabled when you are going to sell. Note: Microsoft clarifies that this erase is for consumer use and does not meet government or industry standards. The menu path changes between versions (it appears under System > Recovery and also under Update & Security), so follow the official Microsoft page. If you use BitLocker, keep the key handy and remove the device from your account.

A disk you already removed from the tower isn't clean just because you reset the Windows on another drive. Handle it separately, connected and erased on its own.

If the lot includes a screen, the panel test is in this other guide; I won't repeat it here.

How to set a price without a table

I won't give you figures, because there is no official table and they change every week. What works: look for recent ads for the same model, generation and condition, and position yourself within that range. Lower the price if the disk shows Caution, if there are artifacts on screen, if the card was used for mining, or if the box is dented. A fixed percentage off the store price is a poor guide.

According to active listings on Colombia Move (October 2026), the computer category has a still-short supply, and there are buyers waiting for something to appear. A well-described part doesn't stay unsold for long.

Warranty: two different paths

This is where people get tangled up. Verified on the official sources on October 22, 2026:

  • Occasional sale: if you sell your own tower and don't make a business of reselling equipment, the three-month warranty of the Consumer Statute doesn't automatically apply, because Law 1480 governs the relationship between supplier and consumer. But the civil duty remains: if the equipment had a hidden defect you didn't disclose, the buyer can ask for rescission or a price reduction, and damages if you knew and stayed silent. For movables, the redhibitory action lasts six months from actual delivery and the price-reduction action one year, unless a special rule or agreement says otherwise.
  • Regular resale: if you buy and sell parts frequently, you may fall under Law 1480. A used item with an expired warranty is only sold without warranty if you disclose it and the buyer accepts in writing; otherwise, the SIC explains that the term is three months.

To go deeper, see the guide to the legal warranty for used goods. If your case is unclear, confirm with the SIC.

Delivery and payment without scares

Deliver in a public place, test the part in front of the buyer, and confirm payment in your own bank's app, not in a screenshot the other person shows you. Don't let go of the card until you see the balance. If the part is shipped, write in the ad who handles shipping and when it is dispatched; in this guide to carriers it explains how domestic shipping works.

And if the part doesn't turn on, don't advertise it as working. A computer or peripheral that is already waste should not go to informal scrap collectors or companies without an environmental license; according to MinAmbiente, the route is the producers' post-consumer programs. What still works can be reused and sold as used.

More general ideas for selling without a commission are in the guide on where to sell used items.

Frequently asked questions

❓ Does selling my used tower or graphics card oblige me to give a three-month warranty?

No, if it's an occasional sale and you don't make a business of reselling equipment. If you resell regularly, the three months may apply when there was no written acceptance of selling without warranty. In both cases you must not hide a serious defect that already existed (verify on the official source).

❓ What screenshot do I show someone who doubts the disk or the GPU?

A disk health reading from CrystalDiskInfo and, if you're selling the card, the GPU-Z info with model and memory, plus a photo of the part. That doesn't replace turning on the machine in front of the buyer, nor is it an official certificate.

❓ How do I erase the disk before handing it over?

On Windows, use Remove everything with Clean data enabled, then remove the device from your Microsoft account. Microsoft warns that this erase does not meet government or industry standards, and a disk already extracted must be erased separately (verify on the official source).

❓ Where do I publish the tower or the parts without paying an intermediary?

In the computers category of Colombia Move, with model, city and neighborhood for delivery, photos of the part and price. Buyers message you directly via WhatsApp, without a commission. You can also compare with other platforms, but check their costs (verify on the official source).

❓ How much should I ask for the card or the tower?

The price comes from recent ads for the same model and the real condition, not from a fixed percentage of the store value. Lower it if the disk shows Caution, there are artifacts, it was used for mining, or the box is dented. There is no official price table in pesos (verify on the official source).

❓ How do I sell safely and avoid scams?

Deliver in a public place, test the part powered on, and don't let it go until you see the deposit in your bank's app. If it's shipped, write in the ad who handles shipping and when it is dispatched (verify on the official source).

❓ Do I have to declare taxes for selling the household PC?

A personal sale doesn't carry an automatic duty to declare, according to the sources consulted. If you already file income tax or selling equipment is habitual, the DIAN distinguishes net income or occasional gain depending on how long you held the asset; consult an accountant (verify on the official source).
